Valemount offers a seasonal salmon run, trails connected to the town centre, a nearby lakeside park and local railway history. When planning your stay, you can first choose the right season and then decide how to balance wildlife viewing, outdoor activities and culture.

Salmon and Trails in Valemount

George Hicks Regional Park has a viewing platform for watching spawning Chinook salmon. Each year, the fish travel from the Pacific Ocean via the Fraser River to Swift Creek; the seasonal window runs from late July to mid-August. If you plan to see this natural spectacle, schedule your visit during this period.

The Big Foot Trail Loop circles part of the town and includes historic Main Street and 5th Avenue in the town centre. The Swift Creek Loop offers a different experience: it crosses a suspension bridge and leads to a viewpoint overlooking Valemount and the surrounding mountains. The difference between the routes is clear: the Big Foot Trail focuses on town streets, while the Swift Creek Loop features a bridge and views.

The Swift Creek Loop trailhead is accessible via downtown Valemount and Main Street: From 5th Avenue, the route crosses the railway tracks to Main Street; after about 1 km, the trail begins just beyond the bridge. Parking is available before or after the bridge on the opposite side of Golden Years Lodge.

Lakeside Park and Bike Park

Cedarside Regional Park is located 3 km south of Valemount on Little Cranberry Lake. The 18.5 ha park is a popular swimming spot with a large sandy beach. In winter, it has ski runs, snowshoe trails and a toboggan hill. The swimming area and winter activities make the season an immediate factor in choosing when to visit. Check seasonal operating conditions before you travel.

Valemount Bike Park spans two local mountains connected by a small valley and is accessible via forest roads. It offers flow trails, a prominent jump line, carefully designed rock sections, challenging wooden features and occasional technically built trails. Trail conditions and availability may change; check before your visit.

Railway History and Visitor Information

The Valemount Museum is designated as a historic railway station and heritage building. Exhibits at the Valemount Museum and Archives include railway camps and sites, a model railway, an exhibition about the Japanese internment camp, materials about pioneers and war heroes, and local art. There are also stories and objects from the early settlers, as well as an exhibit on trappers’ equipment and cabins. The topics range from railways and early settlement to art and trappers’ equipment.

The Valemount Visitor Centre offers information about local and provincial services, activity bookings, brochures, travel guides and maps. If you plan to make a booking or use the information materials, check the centre’s operating details before you travel.
