At the northern edge of Hixon, Hixon Creek Falls has two short trails. Nearby, Three Sisters Lakes Park, Woodpecker and the Quesnel River add nature and heritage destinations to the trip. When planning, it’s worth distinguishing between destinations in town and those in the surrounding area—and between marked and unmarked trails.

Hixon Creek Falls: Two Trails by the Water

One trail follows Hixon Creek for 3–4 km to the waterfalls. It has only slight elevation changes. The second trail follows the creek to a narrow section of the canyon, where the water flows quickly. The two trailheads are 200 m apart, so they are close to each other but lead along different routes.

Park planning identifies a need for improvements to the second trail. Check current trail conditions before your visit. Viewpoints and access to pools along the creek are also part of the character of Hixon Creek Falls. The 2021 Regional Parks Plan describes Hixon Creek Falls primarily as a destination for recreation and day trips.

Lakes and Unmarked Trails at Three Sisters Lakes Park

Nearby, northeast of Hixon, is Three Sisters Lakes Park. It includes three small lakes and distinctive canyon formations at Government Creek. Hiking is possible there, but the trails are not marked. This distinguishes them from the 3–4 km trail at Hixon Creek Falls, whose route and slight elevation changes are specified. The park also offers opportunities for canoeing and kayaking.

Hixon Falls

Hixon Falls are located beyond Hixon, along a narrow trail, and are 100 feet high.

Heritage in Woodpecker

Woodpecker is about 10 km north of Hixon. The Woodpecker Heritage Church includes a church and a historic cemetery. St. Mark’s Anglican Church was built in 1939; its cornerstone was laid on September 17 of that same year. The church is closed and cannot be seen from the highway. Woodpecker therefore combines a specific heritage site with a clear visitor note: the church is not open for interior visits.

Fishing on the Quesnel River

The nearby Quesnel River is a popular fishing area. It is home to rainbow trout, brook trout and spring salmon, which can weigh up to 30 pounds in summer. If fishing is part of your travel plans, check the current regulations and conditions in advance, as both can change.

Culture in the Wider Fraser-Fort George Destination

The wider Fraser-Fort George destination is home to The Exploration Place Prince George, located in Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park. It is the largest museum and science centre in northern British Columbia. Visitors can explore galleries, see travelling exhibitions and take part in programs. This offers a distinct cultural focus at the regional level, alongside the nature and heritage destinations around Hixon.

Location When Looking for Accommodation

When looking for a vacation rental in Hixon, you can group destinations by location: Hixon Creek Falls is at the northern edge of town, Three Sisters Lakes Park is northeast of Hixon, and Woodpecker is about 10 km to the north. This makes it easier to consider destinations in town separately from those in the nearby area when planning.
