Golden is a winter destination in the Canadian Rockies, between the Purcell and Selkirk Mountains. Within the community, trails run along the river, through the forest and into the historic downtown; a few minutes from downtown, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort offers additional activities. For planning, it helps to distinguish these different settings and the seasonal transportation options.

Trails and stories in the community

The Rotary Trail connects downtown and residential areas with wooded trails. Its main path along the Kicking Horse River is maintained year-round by the Rotary Club and is open to visitors. Other trails run along both rivers, to viewpoints and through the historic downtown. In winter, the Rotary Trail is cleared for walking and cycling. This makes it possible to plan trails according to the season and your preferred focus, without treating the different routes as one and the same.

The interactive Golden Stroll shares Golden’s history through videos that can be accessed using QR codes along the Rotary Trail. It includes two walking routes of different lengths: the longer Reflections Loop has 15 video stations and follows the Kicking Horse River, through the forest and up to Reflection Lake Ridge. The shorter Confluence Walk has six stations and follows the river to Confluence Park. The number of stations and the route features described provide a concrete comparison, without specifying a walking time.

Bridges, museum and outdoor activities

The Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge on 8th Ave North spans the Kicking Horse River and connects downtown with residential neighbourhoods. It is 46 metres (151 feet) wide and Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame bridge. The bridge connects to the Rotary Trail, which loops around Golden; the community considers it a symbol of collaboration. The Golden Museum is one block from Main Street. Its topics include the history of the CPR and the historic Swiss Guides and their families.

Another named attraction is the Golden Skybridge in Golden, British Columbia, which includes Canada’s highest suspension bridges. Golden also has five outdoor skating rinks, including those at Mount 7 Rec Plex and Keith King Memorial Park. The rinks are maintained seasonally, depending on the weather and operating capacity. If you include these activities in your trip plans, consider the relevant season and check current visitor information.

Winter activities and getting here

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is a few minutes from downtown Golden. It offers year-round alpine hiking trails, gondola rides, downhill mountain biking, powder skiing and views; activities vary by season. This selection brings together options for different times of year, without implying that they are all available at once.

In winter, a scheduled shuttle runs daily directly from Calgary Airport to Golden and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. The seasonal Golden Kicking Horse Connector links downtown with the resort’s slopes, stops at several locations in Golden and runs regularly during the day, as well as on Friday and Saturday evenings. Check the current schedule and availability of seasonal connections before travelling. This lets you consider getting here and travelling around town separately, rather than assuming that stops or travel times are identical.

Accommodation and getting around town

Restaurants, breweries and cafés in the town centre are within walking distance of most accommodation. The town’s trails, a visit to the museum and the resort’s seasonal activities are different factors to consider when deciding where to stay.

During the winter season, the Tourism Golden Office at 611 10th Ave N offers visitor services Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outside these hours, including on winter weekends, the Golden-BC Destination app and website help visitors find open activities and events, as well as directions. As opening hours and services may change, check the information before visiting.
