Stuie is near the confluence of the Atnarko River and Bella Coola River in the Bella Coola Valley. The community is located in the traditional territories of the Nuxalk Nation. Its riverside location connects it to a history of earlier Nuxalkmc journeys; nearby options range from a hiking trail to a multi-day canoe trip.
Riverside scenery and nearby excursions
The easy, 2 km Kettle Pond Trail descends to a unique glacial depression known as Kettle Pond. The Turner Lake Canoe Circuit takes a different amount of time: the canoe trip lasts three to five days and travels through striking mountain scenery. The chain of lakes includes approximately 18 km of lakes and 2.5 km of rivers and creeks. Seasonal access details may change; check them before planning. In the wider Central Coast travel region, the Lost Lake Trail passes through old-growth forest to a small lake and viewpoints over the valley. The moderately difficult trail is two kilometres each way. Its difficulty and scenic destination also distinguish it from the easy Kettle Pond Trail, which leads to a glacial depression.
Fishing is also possible in Tweedsmuir Park. The Belarko Wildlife Viewing Area is jointly managed by BC Parks and the Nuxalk Nation. It is on Highway 20, adjacent to the Belarko Boat Launch, and 3 km past the Fishers Pool Campground. Hunlen Falls is a major attraction nearby: the waterfall plunges 260 metres before flowing into the Atnarko River.
Nuxalk history and Stuie Lodge
The Nuxalkmc used to travel upstream to Stuie in loaded canoes to trade and gather berries. Along the way, they rested and visited family in the various villages. These journeys connect the place to a specific history of travel and exchange. Walker built Stuie Lodge on his land in 1931. This construction history is another historical reference point for Stuie.
