Bella Coola combines a strong historical perspective with a variety of tours. The Bella Coola Museum focuses on the history of the valley; the two-hour Walk of the Totems takes you on foot through the village. Another tour starts at the public wharf and travels from sea level to the alpine area. Culture and landscape thus offer different focal points for planning your trip.

Valley History and Local Culture

The Bella Coola Museum is located in the Bella Coola townsite. It presents the valley’s diverse history—from the First Peoples and early European explorers to pioneer settlement and the construction of the “Freedom Road.” Its scope therefore ranges from early encounters and settlement to a later construction project.

Photographs of artifacts from the Bella Coola Valley Museum relating to Aboriginal Peoples include images of a cedar box, a cedar spoon, and a stone tool. Alongside the broad history of the valley, specific objects also take centre stage. In the wider Central Coast destination, the Bella Coola Museum is also housed in a former schoolhouse and surveyor’s residence built in 1892.

Copper Sun Journeys offers the two-hour Walk of the Totems as a guided walking tour through Bella Coola. The route leads from the riverbanks to the traditional school. Tall totem poles tell Smayustas, creation stories from the past and present; the program also includes a visit to a still-operating carving workshop. The set duration and walking route give this tour a clearly defined place in your day’s plans.

Another historical point of interest is the Kopas General Store. It is a historic landmark in Bella Coola, established in the early 20th century. Alongside the broad museum history, this offers a separate historical perspective focused on a specifically named landmark and the period when it was founded.

Between the Wharf and the Alpine Area

Bella Coola’s public wharf provides access to the sea, serves as a berth for fishing boats and ferries, and has a public boat launch. This is also where Over the Top Adventures’ “Ocean to Alpine” tour begins: it travels from sea level to an elevation of 5,000 feet and explores the alpine area. Check seasonal booking availability before your trip.

The two tours have different focuses: the Walk of the Totems centres on a two-hour walk through Bella Coola and its totem poles, while “Ocean to Alpine” connects a start at the wharf with a climb into the alpine area. The first tour has a stated duration, while the second is defined by its change in elevation and destination. This makes it easy to plan the cultural experience and the alpine tour as separate activities.

The Central Coast as a Wider Context

For a broader look at the Central Coast, there are additional routes and destinations distinct from the local offerings. The Alexander Mackenzie Heritage (Grease) Trail is a historic wilderness hiking route that ends at Sir Alexander Mackenzie Park, which is reached by boat. The Great Bear Circle Route travels through the Great Bear Rainforest and the Bella Coola Valley.

Tweedsmuir Park is also part of this regional context. It can be reached by the Discovery Coast Passage Ferry, by floatplane, or via backcountry hiking trails; its southern section lies between Anahim Lake and Bella Coola. The Turner Lake Canoe Circuit takes a different amount of time: this three- to five-day canoe trip travels through a mountain landscape south of Highway 20. Compared with the two-hour Totem tour, it offers a much longer time frame for a separate tour experience.

Ferry services run from the Bella Bella terminal to Port Hardy and Prince Rupert, with connecting services to Shearwater, Ocean Falls, and Bella Coola. Routes and bookings may change, so check schedules and availability if you include these connections in your plans.
