Oryahovo lies in hilly terrain on the right bank of the Danube. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the town of Oryahovo and the wider municipality: the town is home to museums, St. George’s Church and Kamaka Fortress; two ancient fortress remains are located near other villages. When preparing for your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on museums and buildings in Oryahovo or also include archaeological sites in the municipality. This lets you tailor your plans to your interests and the length of stay you want.
Museums and the town’s history
The main building of the Oryahovo History Museum is housed in a two-storey building dating from the late 19th century. At the Diko Iliev and Brass Bands House Museum, the exhibitions focus on Diko Iliev, the brass bands he founded and led, Andrey Chaprazov, and town life in the 1920s and 1930s. Music and individual personalities are thus presented alongside a look at town life in a later period.
Church, houses and Kamaka Fortress
St. George’s Church was built in 1837 and is a cultural monument of national importance. Together with the Ethnographic House in Oryahovo, the Renaissance-era church forms a distinctive architectural complex. The courtyard of the Ethnographic House offers further specific details: it has a well-maintained asmalek, a flower garden and a covered area with benches and a table. The covered area provides suitable conditions for staging patriotic re-enactments. The Ekimdzhiev House is more than 130 years old. At Kamaka Fortress, a rectangular, two-storey tower dating from the Second Bulgarian Empire has survived.
Ancient fortress remains in the municipality
There are historical points of interest outside the town, too. The remains of the ancient fortress of Variana lie near the village of Leskovets, while the remains of the ancient fortress of Valeriana lie near Dolni Vadin. The names are similar, but their respective locations differ: Variana is near Leskovets, and Valeriana is near Dolni Vadin. Taken together, these historical points of interest span the ancient era, the Second Bulgarian Empire, the church built in 1837, and town life in the 1920s and 1930s.
