A Roman villa rustica near Dolna Kremena was excavated in connection with the ancient center of Mezdra. The findings link an agricultural focus with structural remains and various finds.

Roman Traces Near Dolna Kremena

A large part of the agricultural area was uncovered; the structural remains include walls made of stone and mortar. Finds include pottery, tools, coins, and a bronze patera. The findings thus draw attention both to the site itself and to the different objects discovered there.

The term villa rustica refers to a type of Roman country estate. The uncovered agricultural area helps explain this focus of the site. Its connection with the ancient center of Mezdra adds a broader historical context. Those interested in archaeology can therefore view the site from several perspectives: agricultural use, construction, and types of finds.

Village Day and Cultural Life

Dolna Kremena celebrates its Village Day on Bulgarian Independence Day. A 2019 municipal description mentions a traditional bike ride dedicated to Car-Free Day as part of the celebration. It also mentions a communal meal, songs and horo dances, as well as a performance by the women’s choir of Chitalishte “Prosveta-1897.”

The program features a variety of activities: the bike ride brings movement to the celebration and is dedicated to Car-Free Day; singing, horo dancing, and the communal meal offer other ways to come together. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the exact date in advance.

Other cultural events also represent a variety of formats. The 2024 municipal cultural program included the Kremena Rock Fest in Dolna Kremena. In June 2025, Chitalishte “Prosveta-1897” organized the poetry performance festival “Balgariya e moyata Rodina” for the first time; a second edition was announced for 2026.

Chitalishte “Prosveta-1897” is considered the oldest chitalishte in Mezdra Municipality. A secret revolutionary committee was formed in Dolna Kremena in 1872; the village is also associated with Nikola Valchev, one of Botev’s insurgents. The historical and cultural connections thus span the Roman remains, the year 1872, and more recent events and their announced continuation. The site near Dolna Kremena appeals to a different interest than Village Day and cultural events: here the focus is Roman agriculture, while there it is the communal and artistic life of Dolna Kremena.
