In 1844, the Daskalolivnitsa was built as Bulgaria’s first class school. The complex also includes the oldest church in Elena and the region. In the nationally significant St. Nicholas Church, icon painters David and Yakov completed the interior paintings in 1817–1818. The school, church and Kamburov Inn offer different ways to explore history: education, sacred art and everyday culture.

History in houses and collections

The Kamburov Inn, within the Daskalolivnitsa complex, presents ethnographic material on agriculture, livestock breeding and crafts, as well as jewellery, traditional costumes, carpets and woven belts. Another architectural ensemble is formed by the five Razsukanov houses: five houses under one roof, built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The nationally significant ensemble is privately owned and regarded as an architectural whole.

The Popnikolova House and the Museum of Science each offer their own themes. The nationally significant Popnikolova House is home to Elena’s Paleontological Museum, with university collections and material from fossil sites around Elena. The Museum of Science displays nearly 30 handmade exhibits illustrating physical laws and chemical phenomena. These include an Archimedean screw, a pendulum clock mechanism and a drawing robot. Arrange visits to the Museum of Science in advance.

Rivers, forests and protected areas

Elena Municipality extends from hilly and semi-flat terrain in the north to a distinctly mountainous south with steep slopes and deeply cut river valleys. The headwaters and valleys of several rivers lie within the municipality, including the Veselina, Kostelska, Elenska, Miikovska and Bebrovska. The Yovkovtsi Reservoir lies almost entirely within the municipal boundaries. Extensive deciduous and coniferous forests shape the landscape. The area is described as a habitat for deer, wild boar and birds of prey, as well as trout and other freshwater fish.

Protected natural areas include the Haydushki Chukar Reserve in the Buynovtsi area and the Byala Krava Reserve near Kostel. Byala Krava protects 91 hectares of old beech forest and striking pale volcanic rock formations. Crossing the protected areas on marked trails is permitted, including for educational purposes; the rules for each protected area apply. Check the current regulations before your visit and stay on marked trails.

Walk to the water or along the ridge

The protected Hristovski Waterfall is on the Miikovska River. Its water drops nine metres, and the protected area around it covers three hectares. From the car park near the turn-off, a footpath leads to the waterfall in about 10 to 15 minutes. The surrounding meadows are suitable for picnics or camping. For a longer outing, take the Markov Kamak–Rayuv Kamak hiking route: it takes about three hours and crosses ridge country and oak-hornbeam forest, passing rock formations and offering views of the Yovkovtsi Reservoir. These different time estimates give you a practical guide to choosing between a short walk to a natural attraction and a longer hike.

Recreational fishing for species such as carp, silver carp and pike-perch is possible at the reservoir, but only in designated areas. Access roads are mostly unpaved; check current fishing restrictions before your visit. Cycling trips in the area can also include picnics by the river, tastings of Elena meat specialities, seasonal swimming at Borovishitsa and a zip line.

Local specialities and practical information

Honey is considered a speciality of the Elena Balkan; organic honey is available in Elena. The Pchela beekeepers’ association carries on a tradition dating back to 1902. For a different tasting experience, visit Maryan Winery, about six kilometres from Elena. It offers an informative wine tasting accompanied by Elena meat specialities. Booking in advance is recommended.
