Popovo offers distinctly different points of interest for a stay: a historic church complex, a forest park with various facilities, and the ruins of a late-antique city west of the town. On the outskirts, Kavatsite Reservoir also offers opportunities for sport fishing.
Church of St. Michael the Archangel, the Old Church
The municipal description, last revised in 2012, identifies Popovo’s Church of St. Michael the Archangel, also known as the Old Church, as an active historic church complex. Its features include wall paintings, a bell tower and a stone enclosure. Memorial plaques and graves are associated with Russian soldiers killed in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877.
The complex thus brings together sacred architecture and the remembrance of a specifically identified chapter of history. If you are interested in churches and historic memorial sites, several aspects meet in one place: the wall paintings and tower, the stone enclosure, and plaques and graves connected with 1877.
The City Garden as a forest park
Popovo’s City Garden is a forest park that stretches towards Kavatsite Reservoir. Its listed features include shaded paths, picnic shelters, children’s areas and sculptures. The grounds also include a chapel dating from 1908, sports courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor swimming pool. The same park therefore offers areas for walks and picnics as well as sports and swimming facilities alongside a historic building.
Some facilities may be available seasonally. If the outdoor pool or a particular sports activity is important to your visit, check its availability in advance. The paths, shelters and children’s areas offer a different focus from the sports facilities; the chapel dating from 1908 adds a distinct historic point of interest to the park.
Sport fishing at Kavatsite Reservoir
Kavatsite Reservoir lies on the outskirts of Popovo. Sport fishing there requires a ticket; access to fishing also requires a state fishing licence and membership in the local anglers’ association. These participation requirements are therefore an essential part of planning and distinguish this activity from a simple sightseeing option.
Permits and operating procedures may change. Check the fishing requirements locally before planning your visit. If sport fishing is important to your choice, factor in the ticket, licence and association membership from the outset rather than assuming the activity will be available spontaneously.
Kovachevsko Kale west of Popovo
The ruins of the late-antique fortress and city of Kovachevsko Kale lie about 7 km west of Popovo, next to the Popovo–Byala road.
When choosing between the historic sites, their different character is particularly useful to bear in mind: the Old Church is a church complex with wall paintings, a tower and memorial plaques; Kovachevsko Kale refers to the ruins of a late-antique fortress and city. The City Garden and reservoir complement these cultural highlights with park facilities and sport fishing subject to specific participation requirements.
