Hot mineral springs, Roman bath remains and an annual folklore festival held in August shape the character of Starozagorski bani. The area’s distinctive features offer several clear reasons to visit: balneological tradition, archaeological traces and a cultural programme featuring Bulgarian cuisine and crafts. In the centre, there is also a park with a lake, as well as springs and bath buildings. You can choose what to focus on based on what matters most for your trip.

Thermal Waters and Spa Tradition

Starozagorski bani lies on the southern slopes of Sarnena Gora, at an altitude of 370 metres above sea level. Three thermal springs emerge from Triassic dolomite and limestone. Their hot mineral water is used for spa treatments and balneotherapy. The mineral water is considered hot at 42°C; its pH is given as 9.4 and its total mineralisation as 0.55 g/l. A municipal notice dated 23 December 2022 states that the public bath uses mineral water at about 40°C. If you plan to visit this bath, check the current opening arrangements before your visit.

Archaeological Traces in the Town Centre

A prehistoric settlement mound lies in the town centre, next to the mineral springs and the bath building. It dates from the sixth to the fourth millennium BC. An inscription preserved at the Roman baths next to the mound dates them to AD 162–163. Other remains from the Thracian and Roman periods include bathing rooms and pools made of transparent marble. To understand the chronology, consider both periods: the mound represents prehistoric settlement, while the inscription and bath structures mark the Roman period.

Folklore, Cuisine and Crafts in August

The annual National Thracian Folklore Gathering “Bogorodichna Stapka” takes place in August and aims to preserve Bulgarian folk traditions and customs. The stages are located in the central parks of Starozagorski bani; their arrangement may change from one edition to the next. The programme includes tastings of traditional “grandmother’s recipes” and an exhibition of Bulgarian foods. There is also the “Street of Crafts” bazaar, with demonstrations of traditional crafts. Individual programme details may vary as well. If the festival is an important reason for your trip, check the specific dates and programme in advance.

Parks, Scenery and Trails

The large park with a lake in the town centre is a year-round recreational area. There are several eco-trails in the area, as well as marked routes in Sarnena Sredna Gora. Starozagorski bani has a transitional continental climate with a slight mountain influence. The natural rock formation Bogorodichna Stapka lies about one kilometre north of the spa centre. Its rock hollow resembles a human footprint; the water in the depression does not dry up. The small Rozhdestvo Bogorodichno chapel stands right next to the rock formation. For orientation: the park is in the centre, Bogorodichna Stapka is about one kilometre to the north, and the marked routes are part of the network in Sarnena Sredna Gora.
