Pasarel Lake lies right beside Dolni Pasarel; trails leading into the surrounding mountains start from Pasarel. The area combines walks by the water with marked hiking and cycling trails, as well as cultural points of interest in the village. When planning, it is worth noting the different time estimates for the routes: they range from a trail to the nearby monastery to a several-hour hike via Polovrak. There are also clear rules for activities at the lake.
Water, Trails and Rules
Pasarel Lake is an artificial reservoir on the Iskar River in the Pancharevo Gorge, between the Plana and Lozenska mountains. The lake lies right beside Dolni Pasarel; the Iskar Reservoir is just above the village. People take walks and have picnics at Pasarel Lake, and a forest trail runs along its northern side. Swimming and fishing are prohibited because the lake supplies water. So plan your visit to the lake for walks and picnics, not for swimming or fishing.
Hiking and Cycling from Pasarel
Hiking and cycling trails from Pasarel lead into the surrounding mountains and beech forests. The marked trail to the nearby monastery takes about 40 minutes. The marked approaches to Peyo Buka Hut are estimated to take about 60 to 90 minutes. Another option is the four- to five-hour route via Polovrak. The time estimates vary considerably and can help you choose a destination that fits the time you have available.
The route to Polovrak climbs gently through pine groves, meadows and oak forest. From Polovrak, there are views towards Sofia, Stara Planina, Vitosha, Plana, Rila and the Iskar Reservoir. So time is not the only consideration when choosing a route: the described course through forests and meadows, along with the landscapes visible from Polovrak, gives the hike its own character.
Church, Chapel and Village Traditions
The Church of St. George the Victorious in Dolni Pasarel was built around the beginning of the 17th century. The Chapel of St. George the Victorious is 2 km northwest of the village and is kept unlocked for prayer and worship. The Pasarelci dance ensemble carries on village traditions and takes part in local village festivals. Thus, architectural history and continuing customs represent distinct cultural themes: a religious building with a long history and traditions that remain part of village life.
Garvanets and Getting There
Garvanets, a protected natural landmark and peak, lies on the eastern edge of Dolni Pasarel. It can be reached by car; trails lead to the upper meadows and to viewpoints overlooking the Iskar Gorge and Plana. Its location and the trails described make this natural site a distinct way to explore the surrounding area.
Bus 3 stops at the bridge by Pasarel Lake, where parking is also available. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date. If you are arriving by car, the parking at the bridge is a useful landmark.
