The Gurgulyat Pantheon commemorates those who fell in the Battle of Gurgulyat during the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885. History and architecture are therefore central to planning a stay; the combined eco hiking and eco cycling route also leads to the Pantheon, adding an outdoor route to your view of the area.

War Memorial at the Pantheon

The Battle of Gurgulyat was an episode in the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885. An official commemorative speech describes it as one of the most important battles of that war. The Gurgulyat Pantheon is in the Tsarkviste area and commemorates the people killed in the battle.

The Pantheon was built between 1983 and 1985 to mark the centenary of the war. Its form is that of a truncated square pyramid. The structure is about 20 metres high and 25 to 30 metres wide, with an area of around 700 square metres. Its form and dimensions give the memorial a clearly defined architectural character.

The site also has an older church history: the Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah once stood on the hill above Gurgulyat, in the Tsarkviste area. The Pantheon was later built on its site.

The Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah

The new Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah is located in the centre of Gurgulyat. Construction began in 2005. A 2013 report by the Bulgarian Patriarchate gives 10 October as the consecration date.

The church has a carved wooden iconostasis and painted icons. This makes it possible to place the area’s church history at two different points: the site of the former church in Tsarkviste and the new church in the centre of the village.

Hiking and Cycling Route to the Pantheon

The Galyabovtsi–Petlyuka–Gurgulyat route connects the Galyabovtsi–Petlyuka eco hiking trail with the Gurgulyat–Petlyuka eco cycling trail. The combined route reaches the Pantheon in Gurgulyat. This lets you combine the memorial’s history with an outdoor route.

At the route’s highest point, an observation tower offers views of individual rocks and the river gorge. The route also includes a rest area with a children’s playground. A picnic in nature is another option. These features give the route more than one focus: the views, the rest area, and the path to the Pantheon are all part of its description.

Petlyuka is about one kilometre east of Gurgulyat; its approximate location helps put the place name in the route’s title into context. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Putting Gurgulyat in Context for Your Stay

The church and Pantheon represent different chapters in the area’s history; the route leads to the memorial and connects it with hiking and cycling trails. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Gurgulyat, consider whether your trip will focus mainly on church history, the Pantheon, or also the combined route. This helps you match the focus of your stay to the topics actually described.
