For hikes starting from Yamna, two clearly described destinations offer useful planning reference points. The Waterfalls Trail to Vrana Voda is considered easy and suitable for children. A marked trail leads to Thracian Chertigrad from Upper Yamna via Zebrovitsa; the estimated duration is approximately two hours. The waterfall trail is explicitly described as suitable for children, while the fortress hike is given an approximate duration.
Waterfall and Mountain Landscape
Yamna lies in the Balkan Mountains near the small mountain stream Zlata. Woodlands and the surrounding mountain landscape give the area a nature-focused character. Reports from the area mention foxes, wild boars, snakes, and songbirds.
Vrana Voda is a waterfall approximately 15 meters high. It is formed by a karst spring above a travertine terrace above the Stara River. The access route starts in Padesh and initially follows a cart track, then a forest path. The climb to the waterfall takes about 30 minutes. Check local trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
A yellow-marked route leads from Etropole Monastery via Suha Raven to Vrana Voda near Yamna. The two route descriptions differ in their starting points and paths: the approach from Padesh is described as following a cart track and forest path, while the yellow route starts at Etropole Monastery and goes via Suha Raven.
Chertigrad and Historic Hiking Trails
Chertigrad lies between Yamna and the villages of Brusen, Lopyan, and Cherni Vit. The ancient Thracian fortress is located on a high plateau surrounded by cliffs up to 100 meters high; its remains are still there today. The marked trail to the fortress starts in Upper Yamna at the Obrashaloto bus stop and runs via Zebrovitsa. The hike is estimated to take approximately two hours.
Benkovska Cave is also associated with the history of the April Uprising: it is considered to have been Georgi Benkovski’s hideout during the uprising. The walk from Chertigrad to the cave takes approximately one hour; walking time may vary depending on conditions. The national hike “In Benkovski's Footsteps” passes through Upper Yamna and then heads toward Benkovska Cave and Chertigrad.
Events and Getting There
The traditional hike to Chertigrad is organized annually around the end of April or beginning of May; the exact dates vary. Yamna’s annual winter festival takes place after the week of Saint Athanasius. If you want to plan your trip around either event, check the exact dates in advance.
A year-round service on the Etropole–Yamna route is scheduled to depart at 13:35. As timetables may change, check the current departure time before traveling. This makes it possible to coordinate planned hikes and event dates with a suitable time to travel.
