The Municipality of Elin Pelin encompasses the eastern part of the Sofia Field, as well as the northern slopes of the Stara Planina and the south-southeastern slopes of the Sredna Gora. Its terrain ranges from plateaus and mid-mountain areas to mountainous land; at 1,687 metres, Murgash is the municipality’s highest elevation. When looking for accommodation, it helps to start by planning your visits: Will you focus on Shopi culture and historical sites, forests and water, or golf and spa?

Landscape, forests and transport

The municipality’s forested areas extend across the Ihtiman Sredna Gora and the western Stara Planina. They include parts of the areas around Novi Han, Eleshnitsa, Potop, Lesnovo, Ognyanovo, Karapoltsi, Krushovitsa and Dolni Lozen. The higher forested areas lie at an average elevation of 700 to 1,000 metres. Trees growing there include sessile oak, downy oak, Turkey oak, hornbeam and beech, as well as black pine, Scots pine and Douglas fir. This means that higher-elevation forest areas contrast with the plains and plateaus.

The Hemus and Trakia motorways, as well as Main Road 6, the Sub-Balkan Road, cross the municipality. The Sofia–Burgas railway line and the trans-European Kalotina–Sofia–Plovdiv–Svilengrad route also pass through the municipality. For passenger transport, the municipality publishes route information and links to timetables. Check timetables and fares before travelling, as they may change.

Shopi culture and historical traces

The Elin Pelin area is considered one of the best-preserved centres of the Shopi ethnocultural tradition. Its distinctive features include a pronounced, hard dialect, traditional white clothing, folk dances, songs and humour. Since 1970, the annual Shopski Festival has been held in Elin Pelin around the Feast of the Holy Spirit. The exact dates and programme vary from year to year.

In the town of Elin Pelin, the collection at the “Elin Pelin 1896” cultural centre presents historical, archaeological and ethnographic exhibits from the area. The ethnographic collection includes a reconstructed Shopi room, a traditional loom, men’s, women’s and Lazarus Day costumes, and utensils for preparing food. The archaeological exhibition includes, among other items, parts of a Thracian chariot, a column pedestal with a Greek inscription, a marble relief fragment, a Roman brick and a ceramic sewer pipe from the Ottoman period. Before visiting, check whether the museum is open and what visiting hours apply.

There are approximately 85 cultural monuments in the municipality. The ancient Trajan’s Road crosses the area; an important Roman road station called Buragara or Bugaraka was located near Lesnovo. Southwest of Elin Pelin are the remains of a 4th-century watchtower, an associated settlement and a later Slavic settlement. Near Novi Han, poorly preserved remains of a Thracian settlement with a defensive wall can be found; remains of Roman settlements lie to the west. Archaeological remains may have limited access on site or may be difficult to interpret.

Other historical sites include the cell school in Doganovo, which dates back to 1835 and is considered the oldest in the area, and a surviving wall of a 17th-century Ottoman caravanserai in Novi Han. Nearby Eleshnitsa Monastery stands at the foot of Murgash, in the forest of the Stara Planina. Its church preserves important frescoes from the early 17th century and has been restored. The monastery is also associated with religious scholarship of the 16th and 18th centuries, including a 16th-century Psalter and a Gospel with notes from 1577, 1718 and 1730.

Water, golf and spa

The municipality’s bodies of water include the Ognyanovo Reservoir, with a stated capacity of 32 million cubic metres, and the Taratorskoto Micro-Reservoir above Gabra, with a capacity of approximately 5 million cubic metres. Actual volumes may fluctuate with water levels. The Ognyanovo Reservoir is considered suitable for water sports and motorised water sports. Before participating, check the specific facilities, regulations and operating conditions.

Three geothermal springs are named in the municipality: the spring in Ravno Pole is of national importance, Toplika is in Eleshnitsa, and another borehole is located near Elin Pelin. Ravno Pole is also home to the Sveta Sofia Golf Club and SPA. Its 18-hole course is considered Bulgaria’s first to receive an official European Golf Association rating. Facilities also include a golf academy with practice and analysis areas, Finnish and herbal saunas, a steam room, relaxation and fitness areas, and indoor and outdoor mineral-water pools. Check the facilities and access arrangements before visiting.
