Dospat Reservoir lies right next to the town. Water, lakeside paths, and nature trails offer different highlights for your trip; fountain-building craftsmanship and historic sites add to the picture of Dospat.
Reservoir, lakeshore, and fishing opportunities
The reservoir is 18 kilometers long, about one kilometer wide, and was built in 1967. Visitors come throughout the year; summer is considered the busiest time, although visitor numbers may vary. Sport fishing is also possible at Dospat Reservoir: the methods mentioned include float fishing, bottom fishing, fly-fishing, fishing with artificial lures, and the Buldo method.
The modern lakeside promenade is locally known as the “Little Bosphorus.” Within the wider Dospat destination, it is 2,120 meters long and three meters wide and is reserved exclusively for pedestrians. Along the promenade, there are pavilions, a barbecue area, two fire pits, tables, benches, and a children’s playground. This gives you the choice of spending time by the water, going for a walk, or taking a longer stretch of the route.
Trails and nature in Keltepe Eco-Park
The tourist trail in Keltepe Eco-Park is 790 meters long and has rest areas, tables, and a stage. Text and images cover trees, birds, and mammals, as well as landforms, rivers, and the reservoir. The trail thus combines exercise with insights into the nature of the area. Since maintenance and the condition of the information boards may change, check these conditions before your visit.
For a longer excursion, the wider Dospat destination offers further options. A route from Dospat follows an old paved path into the protected landscape of Karadzhadere. The longer Karadzhadere route is a three- to four-hour loop that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Compared with the 790-meter trail in the Eco-Park, it requires considerably more time.
Karadzhadere was established to protect the otters living there, which are considered very rare and endangered. Wildlife sightings are therefore not guaranteed. At the Karadja Dere–Kaleto route, the Forest Protection Center offers information, guides, and binoculars for rent to observe animals and birds. Visitor services may vary depending on the season and staffing; check their availability in advance.
Nearby is Pochilenata Barchina, with fortress remains, a sanctuary, and panoramic views. The site can be reached by jeep and on foot. Since access conditions may change, check them before your visit.
Fountain-building craftsmanship, history, and local cuisine
In Dospat’s Keltepe neighborhood, the Rhodope Fountains Park Museum presents local fountain-building craftsmanship through fountain models and includes a panoramic trail. This traditional craft provides a different focus from the nature trails. The cultural-tourism features of the visitor route in Dospat also include old houses from the National Revival period on Aleksandar Stamboliyski Street. Individual houses may change over time.
In the wider Dospat destination, the annual Gathering of the Fountain Builders, also known as the “Traditional Cultural Festivities,” takes place in the Sabora area at the end of August. It is held under the patronage of the mayor of Dospat Municipality. Check the exact dates before traveling. Also within the wider destination, near Tsrancha, is the rock formation Skalet. It was used as a sanctuary in the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age; ancient Thracian pagan rituals took place there.
Trout, potatoes, and cheese are associated with Dospat’s Bulgarian, Rhodope, and fish-based cuisine. Local shopping options include handmade bread and dairy products from a dairy in Dospat. For information, Dospat has a Tourist Information Center that provides assistance to residents and visitors.
