Veliki Preslav combines historic architecture with protected landscapes. In the town, the Rotunda Church, the Archaeological Museum and several churches offer different ways to explore history; south of the town lies the Patleyna protected area, while Dervisha is nearby. As you plan your trip, consider whether you would like to focus on the history of Preslav, nature or both.

Preslav’s history and the archaeological reserve

Following the Church and People’s Council of Preslav, Veliki Preslav was declared the capital of the Bulgarian state in 893. Preslav was a spiritual and literary centre and is associated with the development of the Slavic script and Bulgaria’s Golden Age. This history can also be seen in the architectural remains: the Veliki Preslav National Historical and Archaeological Reserve preserves traces of churches, monasteries, workshops, studios and palaces.

The remains of the Great Palace have been preserved in the palace complex. One distinctive architectural feature is the throne hall: it was a three-aisled hall with three sections. The reserve therefore offers a view of everything from large building complexes to the clearly described internal layout of the hall. If you are interested in the historic site, these details offer more than an overview of the types of buildings that once stood here.

Churches and collections

The Rotunda Church is considered an expression of the highest achievements of Old Bulgarian monumental art. Its rich decoration includes marble carvings, painted ceramics and glass mosaics. The Veliki Preslav Archaeological Museum also displays a monumental ceramic icon of Saint Theodore and has a collection of lead seals. The architecture and museum objects offer different points of interest: the decoration of a building in one case, sacred art and a collection of seals in the other.

The churches in the town also differ in their recorded features. St Peter and Paul dates from the 18th century. St Michael the Archangel is located in the centre of Veliki Preslav. St Cyril and Methodius stands in a centuries-old pine forest within the Archaeological Reserve. These places complement the larger sites and collections with further historical and geographical connections, each of its own.

Patleyna and Dervisha: nature nearby

The Patleyna protected area lies within the land of Veliki Preslav, four kilometres south of the town. A visitor trail is marked through the area. Patleyna protects Bulgaria’s largest natural population of wild carob. For your choice, this means the area combines a marked trail with a specific conservation purpose, without implying that these two features are one and the same.

Archaeological sites are also part of the area around Patleyna. Within or very close to the protected area are the remains of a craft workshop with kilns dating from the First Bulgarian Empire, from the late 9th to the early 10th century. The 10th-century medieval monastery of St Panteleimon is also within or very close to the area. The precise location of both sites is deliberately left open.

Dervisha is another protected area nearby: it lies three kilometres from Veliki Preslav on the northern slope of the Preslav Mountains. Designated as a maintained reserve, it preserves Bulgaria’s only natural population of horse chestnut trees. Compared with Patleyna, different landscape features take centre stage: wild carob and a marked visitor trail there, and the natural horse chestnut population and mountain-slope setting here.

Planning your visit

The Veliki Preslav National Historical and Archaeological Reserve has information boards and a tourist information centre. For a visit focused on history, you can centre your itinerary on the reserve’s sites, the Rotunda Church and the museum collections. If you would like to add nature experiences, Patleyna and Dervisha offer distinct points of interest. This lets you plan your trip around your specific interests, rather than treating cultural and natural attractions as a single sightseeing programme.
