Rock Art Near Ivanovo

The Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo offer a distinctive gateway to the municipality’s culture. Near the village of Ivanovo, churches, chapels, monasteries and cells carved into the rock form a complex. The 14th-century murals testify to the exceptional skill of the artists of the Tarnovo School of Painting. It is the combination of rock architecture and medieval painting that makes this place such a striking cultural attraction.

Places with Different Layers of History

A different period in history is represented by the Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God in Tabachka. Built in 1862, it has 82 icons by masters of the Trevna School and houses a museum with liturgical books donated by the Russian tsar’s family. This place brings the church furnishings and donations into focus.

Prehistoric finds dating to 4300 BC were discovered in the Vodna Cave near Tabachka. The church and the cave finds offer different perspectives on time: here, a 19th-century building stands alongside evidence from prehistoric times.

Folklore and Archaeological Heritage in Koshov

Koshov is home to a 12-member women’s folklore group and a 20-member amateur men’s ensemble. The old ritual “Djamal” is also reenacted there. Koshov’s archaeological attractions include the Gramovets rock monastery complex. Together, these details offer a glimpse into different cultural facets of the place: organized folklore, a reenacted ritual and an archaeological site.

Nature Park and River Landscape

Rusenski Lom Nature Park includes parts of the areas of Svalenik, Shtraklevo, Nisovo, Cherven and Koshov in Ivanovo Municipality, as well as the village of Pisanets in Vetovo Municipality, Ruse Province. The park’s area therefore extends beyond a single municipality.

Near Bozhichen, the scenic gorge section of the Cherni Lom River, with its many rock formations and caves, is a natural attraction. The riverbank cliffs are also home to numerous caves and cells. One site there is called “Tsarkvata” and has surviving fragments of frescoes.

Cherven: Fortress and Circular Trail

The medieval town fortress of Cherven lies in Rusenski Lom Nature Park and is an archaeological reserve. A 2 km historical circular trail starts at the car park in front of the fortress in the village of Cherven and leads up steps to the fortress entrance. Along the way, you can see niches carved into the rock for saltpetre production. A guide from the Regional Historical Museum of Ruse is permanently stationed at the fortress.

Nisovo and Its Hiking Trails

The Rusenski Lom Nature Park Directorate has marked three hiking trails in the Nisovo area. Another distinctive feature is the approximately 700-year-old elm in Nisovo, which is said to date back to the Second Bulgarian Empire. The marked trails thus sit alongside a natural monument with a historical attribution.
