For a stay focused on cultural history, Dve Mogili offers two specific places to visit: the Filip Totyu House Museum and the Church of the Holy Trinity. The Ruse–Gorna Oryahovitsa railway line also shapes the area’s layout: Dve Mogili lies on both sides of the line. When choosing accommodation, it is worth first distinguishing between the local sights and the other destinations within the wider travel region.

Filip Totyu and the Church of the Holy Trinity

At the Filip Totyu House Museum, visitors can learn more about the last ten years of the voivode’s life, his correspondence, weapons and personal belongings. The museum is open year-round for history-focused visits. Its various themes give the visit a personal and historical focus: in addition to Filip Totyu’s life story, the collection includes preserved objects and correspondence.

Another connection to Filip Totyu can be found at the Church of the Holy Trinity. The church houses a copy of the icon of Our Lady of Vladimir; his grave is beside the church building. The museum and church offer different perspectives on the town’s history: one focuses on the voivode, his final ten years and personal belongings, while the other features the icon and his grave.

Cave landscapes in the wider Dve Mogili travel region

The Orlova Chuka Cave is part of the wider Dve Mogili travel region. It lies 11 kilometres east of Dve Mogili and 3 kilometres north of Pepelina, in the rocky gorge of the Cherni Lom River. Its passages extend for more than 13,500 metres, making it Bulgaria’s second-longest cave after Duchlata. About 10,000 bats of various species live in Orlova Chuka, and all are protected. The number may vary seasonally. Since 1978, the cave has been designated an archaeological monument of national cultural and historical significance.

Activities in the area around the cave are also part of the regional offering. These include rock climbing, orienteering and eco-trail activities. A mountain hut is located near the cave area. As specific arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current conditions for these activities before visiting.

Archaeology, forest and folklore in the wider region

Another archaeological highlight in the wider Dve Mogili travel region is Shirokovsko Kale. The site is on the edge of the village of the same name, on a naturally protected rocky spur at the confluence of the Baniski Lom and Cherni Lom rivers. Archaeological excavations uncovered a metallurgical workshop that operated from the late 6th to the early 7th century. The site continues to be investigated.

Near Karan Varbovka, Ajazmoto Forest Park covers 3,483 decares of wooded land. Another cultural and historical landmark in the region is the St Marina Monastery: its church near Karan Varbovka was built in 1890. The “Living Water” folklore festival is held in the monastery grounds every June; the specific dates vary.

Choosing the focus of your accommodation search

When looking for a holiday rental, one simple question can help: will your stay focus mainly on the cultural landmarks in Dve Mogili, or would you also like to include the cave, archaeological sites and other attractions in the wider travel region? This distinction connects your choice of accommodation with your preferred focus, without treating local sights and regional destinations as one and the same.
