The Belene Bridge over the Yantra was built between 1865 and 1867 on the orders of Midhat Pasha. It is 276 metres long and has 13 piers and 14 semicircular arches. It predates the wartime events of 1877–1878 covered by the Historical Museum of Byala—two distinct historical themes.
Museum History and Church Art
The Historical Museum presents events connected with the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. It is housed in the former imperial headquarters, which was used in Byala during the war. In Byala, visitors can therefore encounter both the town’s history during the war and the use of a building from that period.
In the museum park, visitors can see original artillery and a section of the pontoon bridge used by Russian troops near Svishtov. The bridge thus points to a distinct local connection within the history of the war. Together with the events presented in the museum, the objects on display offer a different perspective on the past from the construction history of Belene Bridge.
The Church of St. George adds another historical and artistic dimension: it was conceived as a temple-monument-mausoleum in 1910–1915 and consecrated in 1924. Its features include an iconostasis carved by Stefan Stoyanov and wall paintings by Professor Apostol Hristov. The church can thus be considered in terms of its design, consecration and artistic features: its conception preceded its consecration by several years.
Near Belene Bridge, a bust of Panayot Volov stands at a place associated with his death. The memorial and the bridge offer two distinct historical points of reference: one commemorates Volov, while the other is a structure with its own history.
Exhibitions and a 3D Experience
Art Center Byala features a wax figure gallery and an ethnographic exhibition of Bulgarian folk costumes from across Bulgaria. The Usta Kolyu Ficheto Expo Center offers a 3D experience. The venues therefore have different focuses: costume and exhibition themes sit alongside another form of presentation.
The Expo Center also has a restaurant with a panoramic terrace and views of the bridge and river. If you plan to visit the 3D experience, the wax figure gallery or the restaurant, check current opening information before your visit. The contents of the costume exhibition may also change.
Forest Park and the Yantra Landscape
Belenska Gora Forest Park is 7 kilometres from Byala, in the direction of Popovo. The recreation area has diverse vegetation and tourist-accessible huts. It adds a landscape focus to the historical and cultural themes, distinct from the exhibitions and buildings.
The Yantra also shapes the landscape: in the lower reaches of the river within Byala Municipality, meanders form that are particularly picturesque near Byala. The Yantra Corridor in the municipality also offers conditions for fishing tourism and water sports. Two distinct aspects of the river can thus be appreciated side by side—its meanders as a landscape feature and the opportunities for activities on the water.
