Boykovo offers several specific points of interest for planning a trip: a church dating from the 1830s at one of the highest points, a rocky viewpoint with panoramic views over the village, and archaeological interpretations that are not unanimous. There are also chapels, a local museum and recurring village festivals. This lets you decide how to balance culture, landscape and travel according to your own priorities.

Churches, Chapels and Local History

The Church of Saint Athanasius was built between 1835 and 1838 and is considered one of the earliest churches in the Tamrash Nahiya. It stands at one of Boykovo’s highest points and is designated as a protected immovable cultural heritage site. The building thus links a specific location in the village with the area’s religious history.

The cultural landscape also includes 13 chapels in Boykovo’s territory, located at older sacred sites. Their dedications include Saint Elias, Saint Nicholas, Saint George, Saint Peter, Saint Michael and the Virgin Mary. A museum on the history of the settlement and its traditional way of life and culture is located in the Zdravets community centre on the central square. The church, chapels and museum offer different perspectives: sacred architectural history, religious sites in the landscape and life in the settlement.

Rocky Viewpoint and Archaeological Interpretations

Mărtvite Skali is a rocky viewpoint with panoramic views over Boykovo. It is about 200–300 metres from the summit of Kriv Kamak.

Another point of interest is Linăt, considered an important archaeological monument and located at about 1,350 metres above sea level. The site is interpreted as a sacrificial sanctuary; the Plovdiv Archaeological Museum offers a different interpretation. This difference in interpretation is part of the subject itself: if you are interested in the archaeological past, you can keep the interpretation in mind as one possibility rather than treating it as the one established explanation.

Village Festivals and Recurring Events

Boykovo holds an annual village festival with live music on 15 August, coinciding with the religious celebration in honour of Saint Mary. A Kukeri gathering also takes place during Mesni Zagovezni. The village calendar therefore includes both a fixed date in August and a festival date tied to the movable calendar. Specific events may vary from year to year; check the programme for the relevant year if you are planning your trip around a festival.

Nature and Getting There

Park Zdrave was created in a 60-dekar pine forest planted in the Boykovo area. The park is not fenced, and access is unrestricted.

Boykovo is about 5–6 kilometres from the third-class Plovdiv–Lilkovo paved road, which is passable in both directions. Bus services run from Plovdiv’s Rodopi bus station. A listed stop in the Boykovo villa area is about 3 kilometres from the settlement. If you travel by bus, check the connection and timetable before departure, as transport arrangements may change.

The Rhodopi Municipality in Context

As a regional context, the Rhodopi Municipality should be clearly distinguished from Boykovo. The Rhodopi Municipality lies south to southwest of Plovdiv, at the foot of the northern slopes of the Rhodope Mountains, and covers about 300 square kilometres.

The municipal calendar includes other recurring events: the Young Wine Festival takes place every year in early December in different settlements and lasts two or three days. The annual municipal festival is held between 1 and 10 June, also moves between venues, and features performances by more than 35 amateur ensembles. These details concern the Rhodopi Municipality; the village festivals mentioned for Boykovo should be considered separately. As venues change, it is worth checking the programme for the relevant year if you want to include a municipal festival in your travel plans.
