Leva Reka combines a specific cultural heritage destination with a circular route in the Elovishka Mountains: the active Levorechki Monastery of the Forty Martyrs lies about one kilometer north of the village, and a 38-kilometer loop around the mountains passes through Leva Reka. This brings a historic site and an activity lasting several hours together. When planning your stay, you can give these priorities different weight rather than automatically combining both in a tightly scheduled day.

Levorechki Monastery and Its Frescoes

The monastery is located in the Elovishka Mountains, about one kilometer north of Leva Reka. Its church is designated a cultural monument of national importance and preserves frescoes dating back at least to the 17th century. This brings together its formal monument designation and specific historic features.

The road to the monastery is considered relatively good; ordinary passenger cars can reach it. Road conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

A Circular Route in the Elovishka Mountains

The 38-kilometer circular route around the Elovishka Mountains passes through Leva Reka. It is considered easy, is paved throughout, and has relatively little car traffic. The entire loop is estimated to take about two and a half to three and a half hours. This time range applies to the tour, not just the section through Leva Reka.

This makes it possible to plan the loop as an activity lasting several hours and schedule it separately from the monastery visit. The surface and traffic conditions may change; check conditions before the tour.

Nature and Culture in the Wider Destination of Tran

The wider destination of Tran offers distinct nature and culture attractions. The Yablanitsa Gorge lies between Vrabcha, Transka Bankya, and Tran and was formed by the Yablanitsa River. In the territories of the town of Tran and the village of Bankya, it is designated a natural monument. An eco-trail through the gorge starts in Transka Bankya and passes through karst-erosion landforms and diverse natural habitats.

Another natural attraction is Vrabcha Waterfall, designated a natural monument in the territory of the village of Vrabcha. It is four meters high; next to it, the water has carved a 20-meter-deep rock tunnel. A small path beside the road to Vrabcha follows the Vrabchanska River and reaches the waterfall after about a 15-minute walk.

The rock chapel of Sweta Petka is also among the cultural attractions in the wider destination of Tran. It is designated an archaeological cultural monument. The footprints and handprints of the saint, as well as a petrified loaf of bread, are still visible in the chapel. In summer, it is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In winter, visits are possible Wednesday to Sunday by telephone appointment made the day before; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Check seasonal visiting hours in advance.
