Three distinct themes come together in Strelcha: facilities related to mineral water, trekking routes into the SĹshtinska Sredna Gora, and places with a history stretching from antiquity to modern times. When looking for accommodation, it helps to choose the focus of your stay first. If you want to prioritize pools and balneotherapy facilities, you will plan differently than someone primarily interested in rock formations, trails or historical sites.
Mineral Water and Outdoor Activities
Strelcha has a municipal balneotherapy center with an indoor mineral-water pool and several outdoor pools. The mineral-water-related offerings also include the Municipal Mineral Beach and the natural Bancheto mineral spring. A medical center provides physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise. Together, these facilities show different aspects of the balneotherapy focus: from pools and a mineral spring to therapeutic treatments.
Granite Formations and Trekking Routes
Granite monoliths and rocky peaks rise north and northeast of Strelcha. The formations are spread across seven named localities and are protected under Bulgarian nature conservation law. The landscape is therefore not defined by a single rock formation: its distinctive features include both the granite formations and their distribution across several sites.
Strelcha is a starting point for trekking routes into the SĹshtinska Sredna Gora. They lead to natural and historical destinations such as Zhaba Mogila, Kamennata Prikazka and fortresses, as well as the peaks of VĹlk and Bogdan. This selection brings together different interests: rock formations and peaks sit alongside archaeological and medieval sites. The route to Strelchansko Kale takes about 40 minutes; trail conditions can change. Check them before setting out.
From Antiquity to Commemoration
The Zhaba Mogila heroon dates from the 5th century BC. The complex includes a tomb-mausoleum and a sanctuary-temple. The names make its two components clear: the tomb and the sanctuary are part of the same complex. Strelchansko Kale dates from the Middle Ages. Its defensive walls still stand about eight meters high.
The Memorial Church of St. Archangel Michael in Strelcha dates from 1904. The names of those killed from the April Uprising through the Second World War are recorded at the church. The permanent exhibition at the Nedeleva House offers another perspective on the town’s history: it is devoted to rose harvesting and presents it as Strelcha’s main livelihood from the Liberation to the present day. The historical spectrum thus extends from ancient places of worship and medieval fortifications to remembrance and working life in more recent times.
Rose Culture and Festival Program
The Festival of Tourism and Essential Oil Crops includes an Aromatic Alley and a Crafts Alley. The local tourism fair at the festival includes tastings of rose jam and rose rakia. The program also includes an open day at Strelcha’s Old Rose Distillery, with a demonstration of rose oil extraction. The theme of roses therefore features both in the exhibition at the Nedeleva House and in the festival program—once through rose harvesting, and once through rose products and oil extraction.
The program and access may vary with each festival edition. If you are planning tastings or a visit to the rose distillery, check the current dates and program details in advance. This allows you to combine Strelcha’s cultural and natural attractions with the focus of your trip without assuming a particular festival program.
