Rosen combines its location on the banks of the Luda Yana with a local folk culture whose traces range from community celebrations to historical memorials. The landscape, culture and archaeological heritage each offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Rosen, these highlights can help you first decide what particularly interests you about the area.

Riverside setting and practical information

Rosen lies on the left bank of the Luda Yana and on the southern slopes of the Ovchi Hills. Northeast of the village, on the banks of the Luda Yana, is a fishing lake, approximately 1.8 kilometers away. It is associated with fishing services. An unpaved road, 1.6 kilometers long, branches off from the paved road on the Rosen–Road 8003 section and leads to the lake. The two distances refer to different things: around 1.8 kilometers indicates its approximate location northeast of Rosen, while 1.6 kilometers is the length of the unpaved access road. Road conditions can change, and fishing operations and access should be checked before your trip, so confirm both points before setting out.

Folk culture in the village

The Angel Velichkov-1902 Community Center was founded in 1902. Palm Sunday remains Rosen’s largest celebration and is organized jointly by the community center and the mayor’s office; an activity report from 2019 and the 2020 program document this. A 2019 report from the community center also mentions reenactments of the folk customs Babin Den, St. George’s Day and Enyovden. Thus, a community celebration sits alongside staged presentations of individual customs.

The Rosna Kitka group is organized through the local community center. It includes Rosenche, a children’s singing and dancing ensemble. The group’s 2019 activity report records its return from a festival of authentic songs with nine gold and three silver medals. A dance ensemble was also founded in Rosen in 2009. Since both the activities and membership of cultural groups can change, check the current program in advance if you would like to attend a performance.

Memorials and historical traces

Associated with Rosen are a bust commemorating the Second World War and dedicated to Pencho Angelov Garev (Daskala), as well as a memorial plaque for Aleksandar G. Petkov. There are also seven Thracian burial mounds in the Rosen area. Two burial mounds approximately 2.5 kilometers northwest of the village are associated with the Late Roman or early Byzantine fortified settlement of Hisarya. It lies near a bend in the Luda Yana in the area of Tsar Asen. Pottery sherds from an older settlement have been recorded about one kilometer northwest of Rosen.

The location details distinguish these historical traces: the seven Thracian burial mounds are associated with the Rosen area, while the burial mounds linked to Hisarya lie northwest of it. The pottery sherds come from a different, nearer location. Local tradition adds another form of remembrance to the archaeological evidence: according to folklore, during Rosalia, sick people sought healing northwest of Rosen by lying in the dew. Different kinds of evidence thus come together in the surrounding area, from archaeological findings to traditional beliefs.
