Railway history offers a concrete way to explore Septemwri: In the context of the municipality, a line to Varvara, Velingrad, and Razlog was built in 1926. The Septemvri depot is also home to a narrow-gauge museum train restored by BDZ; its restoration took place in 2004. In addition, the Septemvri–Dobrinishte narrow-gauge railway line runs through Varvara. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the historic railway construction, the museum train, and the operating railway line as distinct aspects.

Railway Line and Museum Train

The line to Varvara, Velingrad, and Razlog, built in 1926, is a historic point of reference in the context of the Municipality of Septemvri. Another rail connection is the Septemvri–Dobrinishte narrow-gauge railway line: it runs through the resort of Varvara and is an operating transport service. If you are planning a train journey, check the timetable before you travel. The road toward Velingrad also passes through Varvara. The railway and road are therefore two concrete transport connections for the region, but each involves different planning considerations.

The Septemvri depot is home to the narrow-gauge museum train restored by BDZ. The restoration was completed in 2004. The museum train highlights a restored vehicle, while the operating narrow-gauge railway is a scheduled line. This distinction helps you separate railway history from current travel planning, without treating them as the same offering.

Architecture and Culture in Varvara

Varvara offers several different ways to explore architecture and culture. Construction of the Church of Sveta Varvara began in 1811 and was completed in 1814; it is a three-aisled basilica. The term refers to a church building with three naves, or three longitudinal sections. This makes it possible to place the church in context both by its construction dates and by its architectural form.

The cultural center “Selska probuda 1927” was founded in 1927. It promotes Bulgarian folklore and local customs through initiatives, festivals, amateur ensembles, library services, and activities for children and young people. The cultural center is active; individual events and dates may change. If you are interested in a particular program, factor its date into your plans.

A notable chapel is also located southeast of Varvara. Its construction suggests an early medieval origin. The three cultural sites therefore also differ in their historical context: the church has specific construction dates, the cultural center combines its founding with ongoing cultural work, and the chapel’s origins are an interpretation based on its construction.

Thermal Waters and Landscape

The Varvara thermomineral deposit forms the northernmost part of a large hydrothermal system. Numerous other deposits lie along the Chepinska Valley, including those near Velingrad. Originally, the Varvara deposit comprised 16 natural springs extending over approximately 400 meters. The mineral springs of Varvara and the old baths are about five kilometers farther along the Chepinska’s gorge valley.

Varvara thus offers both the geological context of the thermal area and its bathing history. The number of springs refers to the deposit’s original form; it is a historical point of reference, while the location of the springs and old baths describes their geographical setting in the Chepinska Valley.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

If you are planning a trip on the narrow-gauge railway, the timetable is relevant; if you are interested in a particular cultural program, check the event dates. That way, your plans can focus on the experiences you actually want to have.
