Momchilgrad combines cultural history with natural themes: the museum collection presents archaeological heritage and mineral diversity, while the petrified forest near Raven features fossilized trees preserved in an upright position. A staircase with 868 painted steps leads to Momchil Yunak Forest Park. For your stay, you can explore the town’s cultural attractions, the forest park and the area’s natural history as distinct points of interest.

Museums and Visual Arts

Chitalishte Nov Zhivot was founded on February 19, 1926; Momchilgrad’s museum collection is housed in this cultural center. Established in 1969, it comprises more than 500 exhibits and presents the area’s archaeological heritage and mineral diversity. The collection may change over time. The art gallery opened in 1992. Its collection includes more than 280 works of painting, sculpture and graphic art; it hosts solo and group exhibitions by local and Bulgarian artists. This collection, too, may change. The institutions have different focuses: the collection is dedicated to archaeology and minerals, while the gallery focuses on visual arts.

The Naim Suleymanoglu House Museum opened on November 18, 2025, and was open to visitors thereafter. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether it is currently accessible.

Churches and Local Traditions

In the center of Momchilgrad stands the Church of St. Tsar Boris-Mihail I, built in 1938. The ossuary next to the church commemorates those who lost their lives in the Russo-Turkish and Balkan Wars. Near the town center is the Old Mosque, built around 300 years ago and still used as a place of prayer. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether access is possible.

The Chapel of St. Spirit is located in Momchil Yunak Forest Park. In 1996, it was restored on the foundations of an older chapel; the work was supported by donations from local Christians and Muslims. A town-wide gathering is held there every year on the chapel’s name day. Thus, the chapel’s construction history and a recurring local tradition go hand in hand, without requiring a visit on any particular date.

Stairway and Natural History

The 868 painted steps connect Momchilgrad with Momchil Yunak Forest Park. The staircase route was renovated with lighting, railings, benches and waste bins. As its condition may change, check the current conditions before climbing.

The petrified forest near Raven features fossilized trees preserved in an upright position along a stretch of a ravine approximately 200 meters long. It formed around 25 to 30 million years ago, when underwater volcanic lava buried a forest beneath layers of ash; the trees remained upright. The area is considered a unique natural phenomenon. At the summit of Stramni Rid, in the nearby Chukovo rock complex, there is a huge lion figure carved from a monolith. The Sharapana near Vryalo is believed to have been used to process grapes into wine.
