City history, religious buildings and a hilly river setting give Kardzhali several distinct sides. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural sites in the city, activities in Prostor Park and excursions to striking natural or archaeological sites.
Culture and History in Kardzhali
The Regional Museum of History was founded in 1965 and houses more than 45,000 exhibits. They trace life in the Eastern Rhodopes from antiquity to the early 20th century. The museum is housed in a building dating from 1920 that is designated a cultural monument. Both the building and the exhibitions are accessible to people with disabilities.
The centrally located, active Orthodox Church of Saint George the Victorious is a three-aisled building from the first half of the 20th century. It is about a five-minute walk from the Regional Museum. The medieval Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner is in the Veselchane district, on the right bank of the Arda, and is also designated a cultural monument. The Central Mosque is likewise an active religious building and is listed as a protected monument.
Another way to experience cultural life is through the classes at the House of Culture. The offerings include music, Bulgarian folk dance, modern ballet, musical theatre, acting and ballet. Individual offerings may change over time.
The Arda, Reservoirs and Landscape
The Arda flows through Kardzhali, whose terrain is low and hilly. The Kardzhali Reservoir is close to the city. Its dam is 103.5 metres high and is an arch-gravity dam. The Studen Kladenets Reservoir is a separate body of water: the railway line from Dimitrovgrad to Kardzhali runs alongside it. This scenic stretch can be enjoyed by train or on foot.
The Stone Wedding is about 4 to 5 kilometres from Kardzhali, near Zimzelen. The five-hectare complex consists of volcanic rhyolite tuffs that are around 35 to 40 million years old. The site can be visited year-round; the route is relatively easy and accessible to visitors. It offers a landscape experience whose geological origins reach far beyond the period of history covered by the museum.
Rocky Attractions and Outdoor Activities
Perperikon lies 20 kilometres northeast of Kardzhali, on a rocky peak at an altitude of 470 metres. Over the centuries, a large cult complex with hundreds of rooms was carved into the rock there. Perperikon can be reached by car on a paved road; a marked trail from Bolyartsi leads directly to its tower.
Prostor Park has picnic areas and paved, illuminated paths. The park also offers opportunities for cycling, roller skating and scootering. There is an adventure rope park for children. These options differ from the geological and archaeological attractions: the park brings together physical activity and leisure in the city, while The Stone Wedding and Perperikon are defined by their rocky landscape and historic complex, respectively.
For a culture-focused stay, the museum, church, monastery and mosque offer different historical and religious connections. Those who would like to focus more on landscapes and outdoor activities can explore the options in the park, along the river and at the two rocky attractions. Details on distance, route conditions and accessibility vary by destination: a relatively easy route is noted for The Stone Wedding, while Perperikon has a paved access road and a marked trail from Bolyartsi.
