Birdwatching and Wetlands

The Green Educational Center in Shabla is a practical starting point for birdwatching: it provides special equipment and a guide for observing local protected areas. Before your trip, check whether both are available for your visit.

Lake Shabla is part of the Natura 2000 protected-area network and is associated with birdwatching. In the Shabla region, the Shabla Lake protected area includes two coastal lagoons—Lake Shabla and Lake Ezerets—connected by a channel. A total of 247 bird species have been recorded in the Shabla-Ezerets Lake Complex.

Lake Durankulak is another natural area in the Shabla region. Its protected area is a Ramsar wetland and a BirdLife International Important Bird Area. The lake is globally significant as a wintering area for waterbirds, particularly because of the large concentrations of geese. As a landform, it is a shallow, enclosed lagoon formed from former coastal bays; a sandbar separates it from the sea.

Shabla Tuzla, also in the Shabla region, is a lagoon: this natural brackish-water lagoon is separated from the sea by a sandbar about 80 metres wide.

Culture and Archaeology

The Green Educational Center in Shabla is housed in the historic building known as the Old School. Its offerings include archaeological and art exhibitions, cultural events, seminars, conferences and educational initiatives. If a particular event is central to your visit, check the date in advance.

In the wider Shabla area, on the shore of Lake Durankulak near the village of Durankulak, lies the “Durankulak-Hamandzhiya” Archaeological Complex. It includes the “Big Island” settlement mound and associated necropolises. The complex contains the oldest stone architecture in continental Europe, as well as the largest excavated prehistoric necropolis from the 5th millennium BC.

Coastal Landscapes in the Wider Shabla Area

The Municipality of Shabla has about 40 kilometres of Black Sea coastline; its beaches account for 22 percent of all beaches on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. Cape Shabla is Bulgaria’s easternmost point. South of the cape, the coast is characterised by limestone cliffs, caves and underwater rock formations.

In Krapets, the wider Shabla area has an undeveloped beach about 7.5 kilometres long, with dunes. Sea fishing and underwater tourism are possible in Tyulenovo. These different landscape and activity themes offer various starting points for planning your trip, without implying a particular route.
