The University Botanical Garden in Balchik combines an extensive plant collection with a clear focus on cacti and succulents. It covers 194 decares; its collections contain more than 4,900 species. The collection may change as it grows. The garden is also designated as a cultural monument and protected area. This gives you a specific reason to make plant diversity and garden art the focus of your travel plans.
Plant Diversity and Garden Design
The main visitor attraction is a permanent exhibition of cacti and succulents. It includes large cacti outdoors and an area with cold-hardy cacti. The exhibition is permanent, while the outdoor displays are seasonal. Visitors particularly interested in these plant groups can therefore distinguish between the permanent exhibition and the seasonal outdoor displays.
In the Nursery Garden, seasonal plantings meet alpine areas and water features; cacti and succulents are also part of its design. The paths there are designed for an accessible public environment, and facilities for visitors with disabilities are also available. If particular facilities are important to your plans, check their current status before your visit. This information applies to the Nursery Garden and not generally to every part of the garden.
The Botanical Garden also includes a historic park laid out during the time of a Romanian queen. It is classified as a group of immovable cultural assets and as a monument of garden and park art. This means that plant collections and a landscaped park sit side by side within the garden—two different points of interest for a visit, depending on whether your interest lies more in botany or historic gardens.
Ancient Traces in Balchik
The Temple of Cybele is located in Balchik’s Old Town, near the harbor. Its construction is estimated to date to around 280 to 260 BC; it remained in use until the end of the 4th century. Within the wider destination of Balchik, it is so far the only discovered Temple of Cybele in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula and the only one in the world preserved in such good condition. The structure has a rectangular ground plan, a façade facing the sea, and an entrance to the south. If you plan to visit the remains, check access locally.
Other Perspectives in the Wider Destination of Balchik
In the wider destination of Balchik, the “Dvoretsa” architectural and park complex was created as a residence for Romanian Queen Maria. It is open to visitors year-round, including weekends and public holidays. The Historical Museum in Balchik offers another historical perspective, presenting the city’s cultural monuments from prehistoric times, antiquity, and the Middle Ages. The medieval fortress in Balchik’s Horizont neighborhood is an immovable cultural monument of national significance. These sites offer distinct themes: Dvoretsa is an architectural and park complex, the museum covers several periods of the city’s history, and the fortress is a designated medieval site.
The natural attractions in the wider destination of Balchik also differ considerably from the landscaped garden. The internationally significant Baltata Nature Reserve was established in 1961 to protect the natural riparian forest and its associated flora and fauna. It is located in the territory of the village of Obrochishte in Balchik Municipality; a completed tourist eco-trail runs between Albena and Kranevo. Alongside the botanical collections, visitors can therefore choose natural themes such as riparian forest and a designated trail between two places.
The coast of Balchik Municipality also features a variety of landscapes: in the northeast and east, eroded cliffs and protected beach terraces shape the terrain. The extensive Kranevo-Batova beach, with its wooded hinterland, lies on the southwestern coast. In addition, the “Golden Sands” Nature Park includes a 26.2-hectare section in the territory of the village of Kranevo within Balchik Municipality. When choosing a theme for your trip, you can consider the Botanical Garden, historic sites, and different natural landscapes as separate points of focus.
