Lopushanski Monastery lies about one kilometre from Georgi Damyanovo and is a national cultural monument. With its church, residential and farm buildings, a white-stone well and a stone perimeter wall, it offers a tangible glimpse into the region’s monastic history. The church itself is Bulgaria’s third-largest monastery church. Monastery architecture and natural attractions therefore offer distinct points of interest.
Landscape and Nature in the Municipality
The municipality of Georgi Damyanovo stretches from Kopren Peak in the Western Stara Planina to Shiroka Planina and includes the Ogosta Valley. This geographic span gives the landscape several points of reference: the mountain peak, the Planina and the river valley. Specific locations can also help you choose a focus for your trip: some natural attractions are in named villages, while others are associated with wider landscape areas.
The protected landscape “Kopren–Ravno Buche–Kalimanitsa–Deyanitsa” includes areas in Kopylovtsi within the municipality of Georgi Damyanovo. The same village is home to Voden Skok Waterfall, a protected natural landmark. There are ecotrails around Kopren Hut and Katsa Kamak, near the Serbian border. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
The municipality is also associated with rural, hunting and fishing tourism. This adds other types of tourism to the nature-focused options, although not all activities are concentrated in one place.
Monastery, Crafts and Village Culture
Traditional carpet weaving, including Chiprovtsi carpets, is associated with the villages of Kopylovtsi and Glavanovtsi. The municipality is also home to two churches with clearly dated building histories: the Church of St. George the Victorious in Gavril Genovo was built in 1872. In Dalgi del, the Church of St. Apostles Peter and Paul was built in 1882 as a unique stone structure. The churches were built ten years apart, offering two distinct points of reference for exploring the region’s ecclesiastical architecture.
The “Georgi Damyanov” house museum is located in the centre of Georgi Damyanovo village. It presents different periods in Georgi Damyanov’s life and career. Traditional customs also shape the culture of the municipality: in Kopylovtsi, Govezhda and Georgi Damyanovo, bathing for health on Jordanovden and Ivanovden is part of the festive and ritual culture.
Other Nature and Recreation Areas in the Region
The “Usketo” protected area lies in the Dalgi del area of the Western Balkans, at an altitude of 1,550 metres. It includes a natural, centuries-old spruce forest. The municipality also includes the “West Balkan” Natura 2000 protected area (BG0002002), designated under Directive 79/409 for the protection of wild birds. Both areas offer their own perspective on the landscape and its protected natural assets.
In Dalgi del, “Mladenin vir” is a picnic spot with a natural spring and a constructed well. Other natural attractions include “Bear Hole” cave in Kamenna Riksa village and “Razhena bara” waterfall in Elovitsa village. The place names help distinguish these attractions across the wider municipality.
