Yablanitsa brings together a variety of discoveries: a local museum collection, regional confectionery and nature and outdoor activities at different locations. History and local traditions offer different highlights from cycling, climbing or visiting the springs.

Natural Sites and Trails

The springs of Zlatna Panega consist of two pools. The eastern pool, Upper Springs, is larger than the western one; the water appears pale blue-green, a colour associated with calcium carbonate. You can drive almost all the way to the springs. A short footpath continues from the car park. The springs were declared a natural monument on 8 December 1966 by Decree No. 3384. As access may change, check the route before setting out.

Other nature sites are also clearly distinguished: Saeva Dupka in Brestnitsa, Yablanitsa Municipality, is classified as a natural monument. The municipality also includes the protected area of Dragoitsa and scenic places such as Bezdanen Pchelin. Of the four eco-hiking trails listed by the municipality, two start in Yablanitsa. One passes through the Bezdanen Pchelin area, Nanovsko Blato and Peshta Cave; another heads towards the Dragoitsa foothills and the protected area. The other two trails start elsewhere in the municipality.

Activities with Different Highlights

In Dragoitsa, cycling trails combine sport and ecotourism and offer views of the plain. There is also a levelled platform for hang-gliding at the highest point of the Dragoitsa foothills. At Great Lednitsa in Brestnitsa, the Via-Ferra climbing system uses ropes, suspension bridges, ladders and handrails; different route combinations have different levels of difficulty. Check current access and safety conditions in advance before taking part.

The Yablanitsa Sports Complex includes indoor and outdoor facilities, a mini football pitch and stands for 200 spectators. For sport fishing, consider the stocked Gargulitsa Reservoir at the entrance to the town from the direction of Koritna. Check local fishing conditions and permit requirements in advance. In Zlatna Panega, the Ribena fish farm offers sport fishing in two pools, as well as a restaurant serving freshly prepared fish dishes; check before visiting that the offer suits your plans.

Museum, Crafts and Local Cuisine

The Yablanitsa museum collection is housed in Chitalishte Nauka. Its more than 1,500 exhibits are arranged by periods in the town’s history. The collection also features recreations of local craft traditions: blacksmithing, the making of Aba cloth, pottery, leatherworking and halva-making. A municipal two-day cultural tourism route includes the collection as a stop on the second day.

Another site of cultural history is Kekevo House, a National Revival-era monument in Yablanitsa Municipality. It houses a museum collection opened in 1966, with letters connected to Levski, a relic sword and old printed works. At Chitalishte Nauka, adults and children can learn folk dances such as Horo and Rachenitsa. Traditional costumes are part of the presentation of these dances and customs. Sveta Troitsa is the municipality’s only church where religious services and rituals take place; if attending a service is important to your visit, check the current schedule in advance.

Sweet treats are another local discovery. At the Vivian 1 and Pet Plus workshops near the Shumaka district, you can learn more about halva, lokum and other confectionery and sample them. The workshops may change their operating arrangements, so check in advance if you are planning a visit. “Byal mazh” is considered a fresh cheese dish typical of Yablanitsa and can be sweetened with sugar or honey.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

The route described from Sofia follows the Hemus Motorway or the old road; when entering Yablanitsa, head towards Gorno Shumnene. Check the current road route before setting off. When choosing a holiday rental, it is helpful to compare the location of a potential option with the places you want to visit: the museum collection and confectionery workshops are in Yablanitsa, while the Via Ferra and Saeva Dupka, for example, are in Brestnitsa.
