The Pogledets hiking trail is a named hiking option in Lukovit. The “Magic of Panega” route is different: it can be travelled by car with sections on foot, or explored by bicycle. Mountain biking is also associated with Karlukovo and Prohodna Cave, near Lukovit. The Iskar-Panega Geopark routes use a signposted navigation system; nevertheless, check trail conditions before setting out.
Cultural sites from different periods
The “Saznanie 1895” cultural centre in Lukovit was founded in 1895 and has a long amateur theatre tradition. In Karlukovo, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God at the monastery is another historic attraction: it was built in the second half of the 16th century. The church can be visited and is accessible by transport. However, as it is located within the hospital grounds, visitor restrictions apply; check the access rules in advance.
Another cultural site near Karlukovo is the rock church of St. Gregory. Fragments of fresco layers from the 14th and 17th centuries have survived there. The dates refer to different findings: the construction period of the monastery church on the one hand, and the fresco layers in the rock church on the other. This is another way to distinguish the two sites by their different historical features.
Nature and activity attractions in the broader Lukovit destination
The “Magic of Panega” route includes the Sergey Rumyantsev House Museum in Rumyantsevo and the site with outdoor sculptures in Petrevene. This adds cultural attractions along the route to the landscape and activities. In the broader Lukovit destination, Panega Attraction includes an eco-trail and is part of the Iskar-Panega Geopark. It also offers trips on the Zlatna Panega River by pedal boat, rowing boat, single and double kayaks, and an excursion and photography cruise boat. Prohodna Cave also offers a specific activity: sport climbing routes across several sectors and at different levels of difficulty. They are considered among the most difficult in Bulgaria. Another hiking option in the broader Lukovit destination is the eco-trail near Aglena in the Studenets protected area, which follows the Vit River. It starts at the Slona rock formation and leads to the site of the so-called People’s Cave. The trail is equipped with markers, visitor areas with tables and benches, a gazebo, a shelter, a wooden bridge, information boards and signposts.
At the entrance to the geopark, in the car park just before Lukovit, there is a tourist information centre with maps, brochures and further information about the geopark. Check in advance whether it will be open during your trip.
