Straldzha offers an unusual starting point for a cultural stay: the Historical Museum is housed in a former granary, while Kukeri festivals and folklore shape the town’s cultural identity. There is also a short hike from Tourist Hut Lyulyak to Marash–Kaleto. This gives you different themes to choose from when planning your trip: local history and architecture, an event in early spring, or an outing in the surrounding area.

Local history in a former granary

The Historical Museum occupies a building constructed as a granary in 1893 and designated a cultural monument. Its collections cover Straldzha’s history from antiquity to the present day. They include archaeological material, photographs and documents, as well as traditional Buene and Kukeri costumes. The museum thus brings together local history, visual and written records, and objects from festival culture.

Finds from Marash on display at the museum include an amphora, coins and pottery. Museum exhibitions may change, so check before your visit to see whether these items are still on display.

Church of St. Archangel Michael

The Church of St. Archangel Michael was built in 1857 and is designated an architectural and artistic cultural monument. Its furnishings include valuable icons and woodcarvings. The church therefore complements the museum’s perspective with architecture and sacred art. Those interested in Straldzha’s cultural history can explore a range of evidence: collections spanning several eras in the museum, and a 19th-century building with its icons and carvings at the church.

Kukeri and folklore throughout the year

The Kukeri festival takes place in Straldzha every year in early spring. The traditional Kukeri costumes at the Historical Museum offer another cultural connection to this festival tradition. The Marash Pee Folk Festival is also held annually and has been part of Bulgaria’s national cultural calendar for several decades.

Music also has a firmly established place in Straldzha’s cultural life. The Vuzhichki folklore ensemble was founded in 1964 and has performed in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Hungary. Straldzha is also associated with the “Songs of Vulkana Stoyanova” singing competition, held every two years.

The events follow different schedules, which is useful to keep in mind when planning your trip: the Kukeri festival takes place in early spring, Marash Pee is held annually, and the singing competition is held every two years. If a particular festival is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates for your intended travel year.

A short hike to Marash–Kaleto

Tourist Hut Lyulyak is located in Terziyski Bair, in Straldzha’s Marasha neighbourhood. The facility’s status may change; check its current status before visiting. From the hut, you can take a short hike to Marash–Kaleto. Trail conditions may also change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Location and planning your stay

Straldzha is near the Petolachkata road junction, a geographic reference point to help you find your way when travelling there. When choosing your travel dates, you could first consider whether a cultural event is the deciding factor, or whether you would rather plan your stay around local history and hiking. This can help you focus your search for a holiday apartment on what matters most for your trip.
