At Dolno Cherkovishte, several themes from regional history and nature come together: Kovan Kaya with its Thracian rock complex, Popmartin's Hole in the village, traces of ancient settlements, and fortress remains along the Arda. There is also a route through woodland, open terrain, and along the river. The archaeological highlights and the approximately six-hour route are separate activities to consider when planning your visit.

Thracian Rock Sanctuaries and Tombs

Kovan Kaya near Dolno Cherkovishte is a significant Thracian megalithic cult complex. It includes more than 100 trapezoidal rock niches and a cave-like tomb carved into the rock. The archaeological complex also includes six more cult niches about 500 metres northwest of Dolno Cherkovishte, a tomb carved into the summit of the rock massif, and traces of a large Thracian settlement nearby.

Popmartin's Hole in the village is considered an ancient Thracian royal tomb. Its entrance lies beneath a row of twelve trapezoidal niches. The rectangular chamber measures 2.75 m long, 1.50 m wide, and 1.80 m high. The number of niches makes for a clear contrast: Kovan Kaya has more than a hundred, while there are twelve at the entrance to Popmartin's Hole.

Settlement Traces and Fortress Remains

A Thracian settlement from the Roman period was found near Dolno Cherkovishte, next to an old Roman road. These settlement traces add another historical theme to the cult sites and tombs.

The fortress remains along the Arda near Dolno Cherkovishte include Kartal Kaya, also called St George, and Sarlaka, also called Hisarlaka. Hisarlaka has a trapezoidal ground plan. Its walls are two metres thick and built of local rubble stone bonded with white mortar. The ground plan, wall thickness, and building material offer a concrete insight into the construction method described.

Protected Area and Route Along the Arda

As of 1 May 2023, the Dolno Cherkovishte protected area covers 4,691.116 decares. It was designated to protect the habitats of protected, rare, and endangered plant and animal species.

The route through the area is 24 km long and takes about six hours. Sections pass through deciduous woodland and open terrain, as well as along the Arda. Its length and duration make it a substantial activity in its own right, not a short stop.

There is a birdwatching point along the route. Possible sightings include the Egyptian vulture, black stork, red-footed falcon, Eleonora's falcon, and long-legged buzzard. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed, so plan for them as a possibility rather than a firm expectation for a particular day.

Beyond Dolno Cherkovishte, the wider Arda Valley supports rural ecotourism and angling tourism. These regional themes complement the overview of the cult sites, fortress remains, and route in the area.
