The Malki Voden Guest Complex lies on the shore of the Ivaylovgrad Reservoir, with Gluhite Kamani rising above the village. Malki Voden therefore offers both accommodation by the reservoir and opportunities to explore nature and culture. To decide what suits you, first consider whether you are more interested in birdwatching and hiking or in archaeological traces—or would like to explore both.

Accommodation on the Ivaylovgrad Reservoir

The Malki Voden Guest Complex offers 36 beds in rooms, studios, and family houses. It is located on the shore of the Ivaylovgrad Reservoir and has an outdoor pool and a dining room with a fireplace and barbecue. Capacity and facilities may change, so confirm any details important to your stay before travelling.

The accommodation promotes fishing at the reservoir and nature walks as activities. Check availability in advance; local conditions may affect access to walks.

Nature by the Reservoir: Birds and Outdoor Activities

The Ivaylovgrad Reservoir is associated with birdwatching and hiking, and the protected area extends north to Malki Voden. These offer two different ways to choose your focus: birdwatching draws attention to wildlife that changes with the seasons, while hiking involves travelling on foot. Wildlife conditions vary seasonally, so sightings may differ depending on when you travel. A survey recorded 65 bird species, including 15 species of particular conservation interest. These figures refer to the survey and are not a current population count.

Gluhite Kamani and Regional History

Gluhite Kamani rises above Malki Voden in the Eastern Rhodopes. More than 200 trapezoidal niches have been cut into its rock mass. Other traces include the remains of an early Christian church, which was probably part of a monastic complex dating to the 5th or 6th century. The trapezoidal shape of the niches is a specific feature of the rock site; the church’s association with a monastic complex remains a possible historical interpretation.

The Eastern Trans-Rhodopes Road also continues from Malki Voden towards Valche Pole and Adrianople. An observation and communication tower once stood on Pyramid Peak, 1.39 kilometres northeast of Malki Voden, and was used to observe this road. Lines of sight to nearby defensive and observation sites are attributed to the tower’s location. Together, the route and the observation point illustrate different aspects of regional history. Before visiting, check which structures remain and whether they are accessible.

Hiking and Cycling

A description of the hiking and cycling route through the Eastern Rhodopes, published in 2014, takes the route through Malki Voden and divides it into three sections, each 15 to 40 kilometres long. Check the route markings and trail conditions locally. The route offers a specific hiking and cycling option, adding another way to get active alongside the nature experiences around the reservoir.
