A memorial plaque in the village center, an Orthodox church and a medieval settlement near Orlovo offer culturally minded travelers several points of interest. The village center and the archaeological site represent different aspects of the area’s history: a tangible memorial in the village and traces of a settlement in the surrounding area. Visitors wishing to understand the area’s history can consider these two scales separately.

Memorial and Church in the Village

In the village center, south of the town hall, a freestanding memorial plaque commemorates Russian troops who were stationed in Orlovo. Its location firmly anchors the memorial in the village. Orlovo is also home to the Orthodox Church of St. Athanasius. The plaque and the church represent different cultural themes: the memory of the stationed troops and a religious site. This distinction helps visitors understand two distinct aspects of the village.

The Medieval Settlement in Its Landscape

The medieval settlement lies near Orlovo, south of the road between Mandra and Orlovo, on the left bank of the Kozletska River. It is situated between the valleys of the Maritsa and Arda rivers. The road, riverbank and valleys provide a different spatial context from the memorial in the village center. For travelers interested in archaeology, the settlement offers a distinct focus: it can be considered in relation to its location between the river and the valleys.

Coins, Plant Remains and Jewellery Materials

The finds add a range of historical themes to this spatial context. A coin of Alexios I Komnenos is dated to 1081–1118. The most recent identified coin is a billon aspron, minted under Manuel I Komnenos between 1143 and 1180. By comparison, the Alexios coin predates the coin from Manuel I’s reign, giving two clearly distinguishable periods represented by the coins. Seeds of wheat, rye and peas were identified in settlement pits. Shells from the southern Aegean, found near Orlovo, were used as raw material for jewellery. The coins provide a chronological perspective; the grains and shells add other types of material evidence.

Horo Tradition and Folklore Festival

More recent cultural traditions also have clear dates. A horo tradition organized by the Vasil Levski cultural center in 1927 began on March 12, 2017, and continued until November 2025. The fourth regional folklore festival, “Orlovski Napevi,” was announced for July 18, 2021, in Orlovo. The announcement promised authentic folklore groups and soloists, dance ensembles, and groups presenting folk customs, stories and legends. The examples differ in duration: the horo tradition spanned several years, while the festival was announced for a single day.
