If you are looking for accommodation in Sosopol, the wider Sozopol destination can offer additional guidance on the character of your trip: archaeology, historical museums, coastal landscapes and regional cuisine each provide a different focus.

Culture and history in the wider Sozopol destination

The Sozopol Archaeological Museum displays more than 1,000 exhibits on the history of the city and region across several halls. The collection spans from the late 6th millennium BC to the 18th century and includes, among other things, ancient Greek vases, amphorae, stone anchors and lead weights. The museum is also listed as number 8 among Bulgaria’s 100 national tourist sites. The broad time span and variety of objects offer different ways to explore the past.

Among the notable finds is a marble reliquary that contained the relics of John the Baptist. It was discovered in 2010 during excavations at the medieval monastery on St. Ivan Island. The Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Sozopol’s Old Town preserves relics of the Baptist that were discovered on the island in the same year. The Old Town itself also has official historical status: it was declared a museum in 1974.

The museums and cultural sites in the wider Sozopol area offer further insights. The art gallery is housed in the “Old Schoolhouse,” a cultural monument in the northern part of the peninsula. It hosts a sculpture plein air and annual international plein airs for marine painters; the programme may vary from year to year. The Ethnographic Museum is housed in the “Kurdilis” house, a local architectural cultural monument. Its exhibition showcases traditional activities and crafts such as agriculture, fishing, winemaking and weaving.

The “St. Nicholas” Museum in Chernomorets also focuses on a distinct period: it displays ceramic vessels and stone and bone tools from the prehistoric settlement in the Akladi area, dated from the 6th to the 4th millennium BC. Other finds illustrate the history of the early Byzantine fortress at Cape Akra and the fortress at Cape Hrisosotira; the dates given span the 4th to 6th centuries AD and the 6th century BC to the 14th century AD, respectively.

Coastal landscapes and nature in the wider Sozopol area

The landscape descriptions differ considerably: the Kolokita protected area combines rocky shores and fjords with marine waters and cultivated land. The Alepu wetland near the bay of the same name is a lagoon separated from the sea by a strip of beach with dunes. These descriptions show different kinds of coastline without combining them into a single, uniform landscape.

The natural landmark of Cape Agalina in Chernomorets is also characterised by rocky shores and fjords and has high biological diversity. South of Sozopol, in the Kavatsi area, the Sand Lily protected area preserves one of the largest populations of this plant. The Bakarlaka protected area near Ravadinovo helps preserve the habitat of the Hager tulip and other protected and rare plant species. Before visiting sensitive habitats, check the applicable conditions for the protected area.
