Hills and History

Medovo lies at the foot of the Aytoska Stara Planina and on a north-facing, hilly slope. From the heights above the settlement, views stretch toward Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Ravda, Aheloy, and Pomorie. To the north of the village, the Aheloy River winds its way; the Aheloy Reservoir is situated on the river. This places the heights above Medovo and the river and reservoir landscape to the north alongside one another as distinct landscape features. The village’s cultural attractions include St. Nicholas Church, crafts, and ethnographic architecture.

St. Nicholas Church was founded in 1870 and is open only on major religious holidays. Plan a visit around these holidays and confirm the date in advance.

Architecture and Crafts at Chateau Medovo

Chateau Medovo, an ethnographic tourist complex, is located in Medovo. Its architecture draws on forms from the Bulgarian National Revival period. The complex also features dry-stone masonry, original wooden elements, and paved lanes. The architecture and materials give a visit a different cultural focus from the history of the village church. Dry-stone masonry is made by layering stones without mortar; the original wooden elements provide a contrasting material accent.

On Crafts Street, visitors can make items using traditional Bulgarian craft techniques. Crafts there are not just something to look at, but also a hands-on activity. If you are interested in traditional techniques, this opportunity is a distinct part of what Chateau has to offer.

Wine, Cuisine, and Local Traditions

Chateau Medovo offers wine tastings in a specially equipped tasting room. The village also has a restaurant serving Bulgarian cuisine with folklore entertainment, and wineries in the surrounding area organize wine tours. The experiences differ in location and format: a tasting at the complex, a restaurant visit with folklore entertainment, or a tour at wineries in the surrounding area. The mineral water in Medovo and at the ethnographic complex is also considered suitable for balneological treatments.

Medovo traditionally hosts festivals that visitors can observe. If a particular festival is part of your travel plans, check the dates in advance. The village administration has also proposed a one-day hiking excursion titled “In the Footsteps of Tsar Simeon.” If you would like to make firm plans for this tour, check whether the proposal will be carried out.

Where to Stay in Medovo

Chateau Medovo offers year-round accommodation in seven two-room apartments and seven detached two-storey houses. The complex is therefore a specific option if you are considering an overnight stay in Medovo and are interested in its ethnographic focus. As accommodation options may change, check availability for your travel dates.
