There are several ways to plan a visit to Kolarovo: a main route listed as taking seven hours, a short marked circular trail, themed trails and local cultural events. The area around Kolarovo is part of Belasitsa Nature Park. The village has a park visitor centre that provides information about the park’s natural resources. When planning your trip, you can start by deciding between hiking time, thematic interests and visiting around a holiday.

Hiking trails: time, theme and route

The “Life of the Chestnut” trail starts at an information board in the centre of Kolarovo and leads into a chestnut forest. It provides information about the plants and animals that live in chestnut forests. The trail is 6.5 kilometres long, takes about two hours and 30 minutes, and is considered moderately difficult. The actual duration may vary depending on conditions.

The route from Kolarovo via the Lopovo locality to Radomir Peak is listed as the main route and takes seven hours. Another option is the short marked circular trail from Kolarovo to Gjolcheto and back. The nature park authority describes Gjolcheto as the only natural lake in the mountain range. The routes differ in duration and destination: seven hours for the main route, and a short loop to Gjolcheto for the other excursion. Check current trail conditions and markings before setting out.

The “Secrets of Water” themed route starts in the centre of Kolarovo and ends at Kameshnishki Waterfall. Its final section is steep and requires caution.

While the visitor centre provides information about the park’s natural resources, the “Life of the Chestnut” trail focuses specifically on plants and animals in the chestnut forest. This distinguishes general information about the park from the thematic focus of an individual trail.

Cultural events and archaeological traces

The Chukata locality lies south of Kolarovo. Remains from Roman, medieval and Ottoman times can be found there, including a medieval fortress. On the second day of Easter, local residents gather at Chukata. This place brings together historical traces and a local tradition.

Kolarovo celebrates its church and village festival on Dimitrovden, which falls on 26 October. The festival programme may vary from year to year.

The two occasions differ in timing: the gathering at Chukata takes place on the second day of Easter, while the festival in Kolarovo is on 26 October. If you plan your visit around either date, check the Dimitrovden programme in advance.

Getting around and travel

Information boards in the centre serve as starting points for themed trails. Check locally whether they are still there.
