The Fornos de Cal inspired the name Caieiras: although no longer in operation, the kilns are almost completely preserved as a landmark. The landscape, religious sites and cycling also shape the topics you can consider when planning your trip. First, decide whether Parque Estadual do Juquery, the history of the Fornos, religious architecture or cycling should be the focus of your stay.
Nature and hiking trails in Parque Estadual do Juquery
Parque Estadual do Juquery spans the municipalities of Franco da Rocha and Caieiras. It preserves the last remaining Cerrado area in the metropolitan region. Its highest point is Ovo da Pata, at an elevation of 942 meters. This gives the park a distinctive, clearly identifiable landscape feature that you can consider alongside the trails in the protected area.
The park’s hiking trails include Trilha do Ovo do Pato, Trilha Yu-kery, Trilha dos Lagos, Trilha do Rio Juquery, Trilha da Árvore Solitária and Trilha das Colônias. Their different names can help you plan your visit around specific routes; however, they do not indicate hiking times or difficulty levels. Check the current visitor conditions before setting out.
Fornos de Cal and local history
The Fornos de Cal are a cultural and historical tourist attraction on the grounds of Cia. Melhoramentos de Papel e Celulose in Caieiras. Their state of preservation and former function are two different aspects of the same place to visit: the kilns are no longer in operation, but are almost completely preserved as a landmark. The municipality’s history is closely linked to this site, since the Fornos de Cal inspired the name Caieiras.
Access is available through the Sábado nos Fornos and Redescobrindo Caieiras programs. Plan your visit around these programs rather than assuming that access is available at any time. This lets you include the cultural and historical site as a specific part of your Caieiras itinerary.
Religious sites and architecture
The Basílica Nossa Senhora do Rosário - Arautos do Evangelho is in the Santa Inês neighborhood of Caieiras, in the heart of an environmental protection area. A 2018 tourism survey describes guided tours during which resident seminarians explain the basilica’s history, architecture, organization and liturgy. If you plan to take a tour, confirm the current visiting arrangements in advance.
Mirante do Cristo de Caieiras is one of the highest points in the municipality. It was inaugurated in April 1982 following extensive renovation. The recreational area is intended to show visitors the region’s natural beauty; the site is also associated with contemplative and religious tourism. Another historical landmark is Santuário de Caieiras, inaugurated on September 17, 2017. With its inauguration, Caieiras officially joined the religious tourism route.
Cycling and getting there
With the opening of an officially sized 400-meter velodrome, Caieiras was established as a national cycling center in 2003. Velódromo Municipal de Caieiras has an open concrete track with an official length of 400 meters. Athletes can arrange access to the track for cycling training; check the current arrangements before adding a session to your travel plans.
Caieiras has a train station served by Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM). On Line 7–Rubi, the route runs from Luz to Francisco Morato, and you can get off in the municipality at Caieiras. Check current train services before departure. When planning an overnight stay, it is a good idea to first decide what you want to visit and then compare the location of your chosen accommodation with your planned destinations.
