Santa Vitória do Palmar combines an extensive Atlantic coastline with lighthouses, protected areas, historic buildings and regional cuisine. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to ask a simple question: should your stay be shaped mainly by coastal scenery and nature, cultural history, or local specialties? The destination offers specific points of interest for each of these interests.

Coast, lighthouses and nature

Santa Vitória do Palmar has 140 km of Atlantic coastline. The municipality is known as “Terra dos Faróis” (Land of Lighthouses) and has four lighthouses. The Rota dos Faróis (Lighthouse Route) combines nature experiences with historical and cultural knowledge about the region. It is therefore a thematic point of reference for travelers who want to explore the landscape and local history together.

One specific stretch of coast is Praia da Barra do Chuí, whose 13 km of largely untouched coastline includes ecologically diverse habitats. Balneário do Hermenegildo stretches for 119 km between Farol da Sarita and Praia da Barra do Chuí. Ponto Meridional do Brasil lies at a bend in Arroio Chuí, near Barra do Chuí. These place names show that coastal experiences in Santa Vitória do Palmar come in different forms: an extensive stretch of Atlantic coastline, clearly named sections and a named spot on Arroio Chuí.

The Taim Protected Area

Estação Ecológica do Taim adds a protected area of particular importance for migratory birds to this coastal perspective. It is considered one of Brazil’s most important protected areas for these birds; more than 30 mammal species have also been recorded there. The area covers approximately 32,000 hectares, 70 percent of which lie within Santa Vitória do Palmar. The first figure describes the approximate total area; the second, the portion within the municipality. If you are planning a visit, check the current access rules beforehand.

Historic center and museums

The historic center around Praça General Andréia has been preserved since the city was founded. The square is home to the Rosa dos Ventos (Compass Rose), considered a nationally unique work of engineering for orientation and determining geographical directions. Cine Teatro Independência was built in 1930 in the eclectic style. These three points of interest represent different aspects of local history: a preserved center, the art of orientation and architecture.

Museu Coronel Tancredo Fernandes de Mello offers permanent exhibitions and lectures. As the visitor program may change, check what is currently scheduled before your trip. The Porto is also home to Museu de Paleontologia Mário Costa Barberena, made possible through collaboration between the city government and the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).

Views and local cuisine

At Porto de Santa Vitória do Palmar, visitors seek views of Lagoa Mirim and the sunset. A specialty of the local cuisine is Licor de Butiá, made in Santa Vitória do Palmar; lamb is one of the preferred meats for traditional churrasco.
