São Jerônimo brings together a visible colonial heritage, cultural events, the Rio Jacuí and its beaches. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on the city’s history and events or on the riverfront and rural landscape. Local themes range from architectural history and crafts to a bike path and waterfalls.

Colonial Heritage and Culture

The Azorean-colonial houses of São Jerônimo are considered part of the city’s historical heritage. Colonial houses with Eira and Beira can still be seen throughout the city, and some are well preserved. One of the colonial houses was converted into the Casa de Cultura. It offers workshops and craft activities, among other things, and thus supports local production. In this way, architectural history is connected with cultural offerings that also include craft activities and local production.

The Gincana Cultural de São Jerônimo began in 1983 and involves the entire city. September is associated with the Gincana as an event month; its Show das Equipes combines dance and theater. If you want to plan your trip around this event, check the latest dates in advance. A carnival is also part of the city’s history: from 1927 until around the mid-1980s, São Jerônimo hosted it. Many considered it the largest carnival in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

A cultural project for 2026, whose funding has been authorized, proposes the sixth Festival de Artes Cênicas de São Jerônimo, featuring theater and dance performances produced by the local community. It also proposes free workshops open to the public, to be held before the festival, in dance, theater, scenography, costume design, makeup and scriptwriting. The cultural formats described are therefore distinct: at the Gincana, the Show das Equipes combines dance and theater, while the festival project also includes a series of freely accessible workshops. Check the latest festival dates before traveling if you want to plan your stay around them.

Rio Jacuí, Beach and Rural Landscape

The Rio Jacuí is considered São Jerônimo’s main attraction and offers beaches for residents and visitors. A river beach near the main center lies within the permanently protected environmental strip along the banks of the Rio Jacuí. The river and beach thus connect a central city theme with the protected riverfront. São Jerônimo also has rural areas with numerous springs. In the locality of Quitéria, adventurous visitors can explore waterfalls. Springs and waterfalls add rural landscapes to the nature theme and differ from the beach near the main center.

Bike Path, Getting There and Finding Accommodation

The Via de Bordo runs along the northern edge of the urban area and has a bike path. It is a distinct landmark for cyclists. São Jerônimo is 57 km from Porto Alegre; the listed access roads are via BR/RS 470 and RS 401. Use the distance as a general guide and check the route for your travel day. When looking for a vacation rental, it may help to decide first what you want to focus on: culture enthusiasts can plan their trip around event dates, while those interested in nature can focus on the river beach, springs or waterfalls.

More Landscapes in the Rio Grande do Sul Destination

The canyon landscapes are another distinct nature-themed option in the broader destination of Rio Grande do Sul. The upper trails, Trilha do Vértice and Trilha do Cotovelo, at Cânion Itaimbezinho extend for 5 to 9 km through Araucaria forest and highland grassland to viewpoints and picnic areas. The Andorinhas and Véu de Noiva waterfalls can also be seen from Trilha do Vértice. Trilha do Rio do Boi is 8 to 10 km long and runs through Atlantic Forest and riverside woodland, along the canyon slope and rocks on the riverbank, and through a river. Together, the routes described feature different landscapes and trail lengths; they are a separate focus alongside São Jerônimo’s cultural and river themes.
