Novo Hamburgo combines a historic center with museums, protected green spaces and a rural area. Events also offer different reasons to stay, from business and trade events to fairs with international or statewide reach. Which side of the city takes priority for you can guide your choice of destination and accommodation plans.
Historic Center and Buildings
The historic center of Novo Hamburgo is protected by IPHAN. Its heritage includes mansions, churches, museums and squares. The historic offering therefore extends beyond individual buildings: the protected old town forms a focus in its own right alongside the city’s museums.
Casa do Imperador is located within Parque Floresta Imperial. It is managed by Comusa – Serviços de Água e Esgoto de Novo Hamburgo and is officially recognized as historic cultural heritage of Novo Hamburgo. Another historic building houses the Museu Comunitário Casa Schmitt-Presser: it was built in the first half of the 19th century, around 1830.
Museums and Shoemaking
The Museu Nacional do Calçado features a permanent exhibition on the life and art of shoemakers. Along with the history of the Casa Schmitt-Presser building and the protected city center, it offers a selection of different cultural themes: architecture and urban history sit alongside craftsmanship and its artistic side. Visitors particularly interested in shoemaking culture can also combine this focus with the city’s fairs.
Green Spaces and Rural Nature
Parque Henrique Luiz Roessler, also known as Parcão, is an important recreational area with 54 hectares of protected forest. In the rural area of Lomba Grande, other nature experiences take center stage: it is considered a destination for outdoor leisure and recreation, with opportunities for hiking and cycling.
Events and Reasons to Visit the Fairs
FENAC – Centro de Eventos e Negócios hosts business, trade, technical and scientific, retail and entertainment events. Its range therefore goes beyond any one type of event. Two fairs also offer different points of interest: Fimec attracts visitors from several countries; Feira Loucura por Sapatos is Brazil’s largest footwear retail fair.
You can plan your accommodation around the date that matters for your stay, rather than infer a specific travel date from a fair’s name.
Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay
Novo Hamburgo has a direct Metro connection to Aeroporto Internacional Salgado Filho. This provides a specific transit link for your journey; check current Metro service before traveling. The connection is a planning consideration in its own right and does not, by itself, tell you where a particular accommodation is located within the city.
To decide whether Novo Hamburgo is a suitable place to stay for your plans, it helps to first identify the purpose of your trip: historic heritage and museums, nature at Parcão or in Lomba Grande, or an event date. You can then focus your accommodation search accordingly. If you are visiting a fair, the specific dates matter; for a nature-focused stay, the protected forest at Parcão and the hiking and cycling opportunities in Lomba Grande are distinct offerings.
