Caçapava do Sul appeals to travelers who want to combine landscapes and cultural sites with a geological perspective. The red sandstone formations of Pedras das Guaritas, a Geossítio on the northwestern edge of the settled area, and the open-air exhibition at Jardim da Geodiversidade Professor Maurício Ribeiro give a stay a clear focus. At the same time, Biblioteca Pública Domingos José de Almeida, Museu Lanceiros do Sul, and Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora da Assunção complement the geological theme with library, museum, and architectural history. For planning, it is worth sorting your interests: landscapes, trails, and exhibitions offer different highlights from the history of the city.

Sandstone, Geossítio, and trails

Pedras das Guaritas consists of reddish sandstone shaped by erosion into ruiniform and steep formations. Pampa grassland surrounds the formations. The rock material, erosional relief, and surrounding vegetation are thus all central to the experience. Chácara do Forte, on the northwestern edge of the settled area of Caçapava do Sul, offers a different geological perspective. The Geossítio covers about 12 hectares and belongs to the “complex area” type. This creates a clear distinction when choosing places to visit: at Guaritas, sandstone formations shaped by erosion define the landscape; Chácara do Forte offers a second geological focus with its designated Geossítio area.

There is also a waterfall on the grounds of Chácara do Forte, accessible via a safe trail. As trail conditions can change, check them before your visit. From Chácara, trails may connect to other routes toward Cerro/Mina do Andrade and Serra do Segredo. These connections should be understood as a possibility; trail conditions and permits may change. Check trail and permit requirements before including these connections in your plans. Cerro da Angélica has a separate visit requirement: if you want to climb it or fly there, you must contact the owner in advance. Contact details may change, so check beforehand how to get in touch.

Geodiversity in the open air

Jardim da Geodiversidade Professor Maurício Ribeiro focuses on the diversity of rocks. In the open-air exhibition, large blocks represent the area’s main rock types. A life-size paleoartistic reconstruction of a ground sloth of the genus Megatherium adds a second exhibition subject. Rock types and a specific reconstruction thus stand side by side in the same garden—a different way to experience geodiversity than the sandstone formations of Pedras das Guaritas.

Cultural institutions and architectural history

Centro Municipal de Cultura Arnaldo Luiz Cassol houses Biblioteca Pública Domingos José de Almeida, with more than 8,840 volumes, Arquivo Histórico Nicolau Silveira Abrão, and Museu Lanceiros do Sul. The library offers a specific connection to the center’s collection; the archive and museum complement it as additional cultural institutions. Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora da Assunção provides a distinct architectural timeline: construction began on August 15, 1815, and was completed in 1935. The period between the start of construction and its completion was therefore 120 years. Alongside landscapes and geology, institutional culture and a long architectural history are thus also available as distinct themes for planning your trip.

Caçapava do Sul is also part of the Caminho Farroupilha route. This route-based perspective complements the individual Geossítios and cultural sites with a named tourism connection and provides another point of reference for understanding the destination.
