A river name leads straight to the history of Guapiaçu’s former church square. The first residents named the settlement São Sebastião do Ribeirão Claro after the Ribeirão Claro, which ran 500 meters below the church square. The former church square is now called Praça São Sebastião. The settlement’s former name thus refers to the river, while the present-day square name preserves the connection to São Sebastião.
Church Square and the Settlement’s History
The church’s history has its own chronology. The parish of São Sebastião do Ribeirão Claro was established by decree on February 14, 1931; the decree came into effect on July 5, 1932. The Igreja Matriz was inaugurated at the end of 1938. The decree, its entry into force and the church’s inauguration mark different steps, not one and the same event. The dates thus place the establishment of the parish before the church’s inauguration.
Culture and Food at Past Festivals
The Centro Cultural “Vera Lúcia Rossafa” was inaugurated on August 8, 2026, and is dedicated to culture, art and the promotion of local talent. Its planned program includes presentations, projects, cultural activities and various forms of artistic expression. For travelers with an interest in these areas, it offers a different focus from the history of the church and square. If you plan to visit the center, please check visiting arrangements in advance.
At the 1st Festa das Nações in Guapiaçu, typical dishes from eleven countries were served over two days in 2022 at Praça Matriz de Guapiaçu. The food stands offered temaki, pork sandwiches, churrasco, Beirute and traditional French fries. The food stands at Juninão 2023 were prepared by municipal schools and philanthropic organizations. The 53rd Festa do Peão de Guapiaçu 2022 – Juninho Paladino took place from September 1 to 4 at Recinto de Exposições – Alcides Bega; a “queima do alho” was announced for the closing.
The examples differ in their culinary focus: the Festa das Nações offered dishes from eleven countries, Juninão highlighted the organizations running the food stands, and a culinary closing event was announced for the Festa do Peão. Together, they showcase international dishes, local participation and a planned festival feature.
When looking for a vacation rental, it helps to first decide what the trip is for. Guapiaçu offers specific historical and cultural points of interest; local history can be explored independently of any festival date. The festival examples mentioned are from the 2022 and 2023 editions. If a festival is to determine your travel dates, check the dates for your intended travel period. If you plan to visit the Centro Cultural, please check visiting arrangements in advance.
