Poconé offers three distinct themes to guide your trip planning: colonial heritage, religious and cultural festival traditions, and the Estrada-Parque Transpantaneira. If you want to focus on history and local culture, you’ll find specific points of interest at the Centro Histórico, at the Cavalhada, and at the Festa de São Benedito. The Transpantaneira offers a different focus: it is a route about 145 kilometers long, connecting Poconé to Porto Jofre. You can first decide whether you’re more interested in the town’s cultural themes or in a named route.

History and Festival Culture

The Centro Histórico de Poconé was listed in 2007 as part of the historical, artistic, and cultural heritage of the state of Mato Grosso. It preserves colonial architecture and local history. For travelers who like to start their stay with a historical theme, this combination offers a clear framework: architecture and local history are part of the same protected heritage. The focus is therefore not only on individual buildings, but also on the history associated with the historic center.

A special event in the annual calendar is the Festa de São Benedito, held every June. The Cavalhada de Poconé also takes place as part of the festival. The cultural spectacle is of Portuguese origin and theatrically and symbolically depicts battles between Moors and Christians. The Festa also includes Masses, novenas, processions, and blessings; it attracts hundreds of worshippers and tourists. Cavalhada and the religious program are therefore part of the same festival period, but show different sides: the staged depiction on one hand, and the religious celebrations on the other. If you choose June as your travel time, check the specific festival dates before setting your itinerary.

The Dança dos Mascarados is associated with religious festivals in Poconé, especially the celebrations for São Benedito. Poconé is also considered one of the birthplaces of Lambadão, a typical musical rhythm of the Baixada Cuiabana. Both themes broaden the cultural focus beyond architectural history and the Cavalhada: they point to dance and music traditions associated with Poconé.

An Educational Experience to Plan Ahead

Another explicitly educational offering is the Centro de Educação Ambiental de Poconé, where the Projeto Terra da Onça Pintada operates. It offers visitors of all ages an interactive learning experience. This gives it a different focus from the heritage and festival themes: learning and the interactive experience are at its heart. Visits for groups of more than 20 people are arranged by prior appointment from Tuesday to Sunday, between 8 and 11 a.m. and between 1 and 4 p.m. Confirm availability before your trip.

The Transpantaneira as a Route

The Estrada-Parque Transpantaneira offers a different planning focus from festival culture: the route is about 145 kilometers long, has 125 bridges, and connects Poconé to Porto Jofre. Its length, bridges, and endpoints give the route a clear profile. If you want to combine Poconé with a route-focused trip, this is the specific point of reference; the June festival traditions, by contrast, offer a seasonal focus.
