At Terra Ronca II, a trail about one kilometer long leads through the cave interior to several chambers. Between April and July, the phenomenon known as the “blue ray” occurs there; conditions may vary. Around São Domingos, cave experiences meet the city’s religious traditions and sweeping landscapes. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different requirements for cave visits in advance.

Cave visits with varying requirements

Lapa Angélica also offers regular guided tours for visitors: they pass through lower and upper chambers featuring speleothems of different sizes, shapes, and colors. The cave is 14 kilometers long and is considered easy to access for people of all ages, including children. Check current access conditions before your visit. Lapa Terra Ronca I stands out for its size: its cave entrance measures 96 meters, and the cave is 120 meters wide. Rappelling activities are organized at the entrance for adventurous groups. Participants climb through dry forests to the cave roof, then rappel down into the entrance as far as the riverbed of Lapa. Check the operator and applicable requirements in advance.

Other routes require a more careful assessment of your fitness. The trail from the parking area to Lapa São Vicente II is about four kilometers long and requires excellent physical condition. Access to Lapa São Vicente I involves a 40-meter rappel. The main access to the São Bernardo Gallery is through a sinkhole located 200 meters from the swallow hole; the route involves an elevation change of 50 meters. These examples show how trail length, elevation change, and access vary from one cave to another.

The park’s open caves—Terra Ronca I and II, Angélica, São Bernardo, and São Mateus—are open to visitors from 08:00 to 17:00. Before your visit, check which caves are open and their visiting hours.

Landscape and nature in the surrounding area

Caverna São Mateus is described as Brazil’s third-largest cave and is 22 kilometers long; parts of its interior have not yet been explored. Outside, São Domingos offers views of Pico do Moleque in the foothills of the Serra Geral–Espigão Mestre. The Serra Geral is also visible along much of the access road to Terra Ronca State Park.

Birdwatching is especially recommended in Terra Ronca State Park. Species found in the seasonal dry forests include Tiê-caburé (Compsothraupis loricata), Maria-preta-do-nordeste (Knipolegus franciscanus), and Formigueiro-de-barriga-preta (Formicivora melanogaster). At Prainha on the Rio São Vicente, there is a swimming spot with crystal-clear water and a gentle current. The local community has built kiosks there from wood and thatch.

Religious festivals and traces of earlier populations

The annual Festa de Bom Jesus da Lapa is held in São Domingos and has been celebrated there for about 80 years. It draws religious visitors and tourists from various places; check the festival dates before your trip. The Folias do Divino have also been part of the city’s religious life for many years. They take place on several dates throughout the year and are led by eight traditional folio groups from the region. They perform at events in and outside the city, attracting visitors from places including Brasília and Goiânia. You can check the dates in advance.

The Terra Ronca area also contains traces of earlier populations in the form of rock paintings: near the entrance to Lapa Pau-Pombo and on a wall among the rock formations of Fazenda Vaca Brava. They add a cultural dimension to the cave and nature themes, though visits cannot be planned in the same way.

São Domingos as a starting point

São Domingos serves as a starting point and base for tourist expeditions in the park. The area can be reached via paved roads branching off BR-020, the main route between Brasília (DF) and Barreiras (BA). Road conditions can change; check them before setting out. The park’s administrative headquarters are in the rural area of the municipality of São Domingos, 13 kilometers from the village of São João Evangelista. They can be reached via the unpaved road connecting that village with the village of Piteira.

If you are looking for a vacation rental for your trip, it is best to plan around the specific outings: a cave trail about one kilometer long, a route involving four kilometers of walking, and a 40-meter rappel are very different activities. São Domingos offers the starting point and base described above; you should still check the visiting conditions for each destination individually.
