Acaraú combines a coastal location with a history that can be read in its specific buildings. When planning your stay, it helps to distinguish between the town and the municipality: the Mercado Público is in the town center, while several beaches are elsewhere within the municipality. This lets you focus your accommodation search on what matters most to you—architectural history and the market, or coastal landscapes and fishing communities—rather than treating every destination as one compact area.

Architectural history and urban landmarks

Casa Padre Antonio Tomás, on Rua dos Poetas, was built in the mid-19th century and now houses a small handicraft center. Igreja Santa Rita de Cássia was built in 1922 and still has its original wooden floor. Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Acaraú was built between 1943 and 1947; its main tower is 45 meters high. The buildings therefore date from the mid-19th century to the 1940s. Their different construction periods and architectural details offer several points of interest for those interested in cultural history.

Mercado Público de Acaraú adds another facet of urban life to the churches and architectural history. It is located at Praça do Centenário in the town center and serves as a place for commerce and leisure. Its central location and role make it a different urban landmark from the individual buildings.

Coast and beach landscapes

Acaraú is on the coast, and the Rio Acaraú, which flows year-round, also shapes the municipality. At Praia de Coroa Grande, river, sea and mangrove landscapes meet; the water is calm, dark and greenish. Praia do Espraiado has a different character: coconut palms define the beach, which is also home to a fishing settlement. The difference between these coastal destinations is clear: Coroa Grande brings together river, sea and mangroves, while Espraiado has its own character, with palms and a fishing settlement.

At Praia de Volta do Rio, a community makes its living from artisanal fishing; the beach is in the municipality of Acaraú, on the border with Itarema. At Praia da Barrinha, clear water collects between the dunes during the rainy season, forming natural pools. Whether these pools form depends on rainfall and the conditions at the time. These beaches also differ clearly: Volta do Rio is associated with artisanal fishing and a municipal boundary, while Barrinha offers a seasonal natural feature.
