Religious festivals and historic sites shape the town of Itarema, while coastal and nature themes feature in the wider municipality. You can choose to focus on cultural history, water-based activities, or regional culture.

Festivals and Historic Sites

The Festa da Padroeira Nossa Senhora de Fátima is held annually from October 3 to 13 at the Igreja Matriz in the town. It is recognized as intangible cultural and religious heritage of the municipality; the annual dates and this recognition are set out in Municipal Law No. 995 of October 21, 2025.

The Museu e Biblioteca Padre Aristides Andrade Sales is located in the center of Itarema. José de Fátima Silva founded it on September 13, 1999, and it officially opened on January 1, 2000. Its extensive collection tells the story of a people and their preserved traditions. The Sede tour includes visits to the Museu Vicente de Paula Rios and the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, as well as a stop at Tanque do Meio.

Tanque do Meio is also part of a historic tour of Itarema. Among other places, the tour visits buildings in the historic center and shares the story of each one. The tours therefore focus both on individual cultural sites and on the stories behind the buildings.

Culture in the Municipality of Itarema

The Igreja de Almofala is located in the municipality and was inaugurated in 1712 at the request of the Portuguese Crown. The Roteiro Étnico includes a visit to the church. In the wider Itarema destination, in Almofala, the Torém and the dance “A cunhã e seus cassacos” are among the cultural expressions of the Tremembé.

The Assentamento Lagoa do Mineiro in the municipality of Itarema is a Ponto de Cultura. It enables young residents to engage with traditional folk culture and brings inherited knowledge together with contemporary innovations. The Sede tour also goes to Bairro do Riacho, in connection with tapioca and handmade hammocks.

Coast, Nature, and Water-Based Activities

Praia de Almofala is about twelve kilometers from the center of Itarema. It is described as having white sand dunes, coconut palms, and calm, clear, blue-green water; beach conditions can vary. According to the description, it is suitable for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Kitesurfing is also mentioned as a popular experience, particularly downwind rides, which are associated with favorable wind and sea conditions.

Praia de Almofala is an important feeding ground for the green sea turtle, also known as AruanĂŁ. It is not a nesting site; nevertheless, nests of various turtle species are often found there. Wildlife sightings can vary depending on the season and conditions. Artisanal fishing, particularly using jangadas, is also described as widespread and sustainable in the area around Praia de Almofala.

Boat trips are available in different durations: the Porto dos Barcos program describes trips along the Rio das Cobras toward Barrinha da Tijuca, lasting either two or four hours, with swimming breaks and for groups of four to twelve people. The Porto dos Barcos program also lists two-hour cooking classes and demonstrations of caiçara cuisine for R$50. Ask the provider about availability and terms in advance.
