Morro do Chapéu’s center is home to historic mansions, squares and the Igreja Matriz; the municipality also has wineries and geological formations. Morro do Chapéu is located in Chapada Diamantina. When planning your trip, it’s worth distinguishing between the town center, other destinations within the municipality and the surrounding area.

Culture in the Center and Across the Municipality

The Capela Nossa Senhora da Soledade is located in the center and dates back to 1911. The Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora da Graça in the municipality is also dated to 1834; a town hall building dates from the 19th century. The municipality’s musical history includes two Filarmônicas. The Filarmônica Minerva was founded in 1906.

The handicraft most closely associated with Morro do Chapéu is considered to be Fuxico, made from fabric scraps and featuring motifs inspired by the local flora. A procession in honor of Divino and São Benedito winds through the town’s streets. This is distinct from recognition at the municipal level: a declaration published on May 20, 2025, recognizes the festivals of Divino Espírito Santo and São Benedito as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality. This means the cultural perspective extends from the center to the municipality as a whole.

Wineries and Tours

Confirm your date and the available tour in advance. At Vinícola Sertania, the guided tour includes an introduction to the winery and explanations of winemaking, agricultural production and the wine cellar. Vinícola Santa Maria offers a tour at its premises in the municipality, led by team members or relatives of the founding family. It ends with a tasting of two selected wines.

Landscapes and Geological Formations

Morrão is a mesa formation with horizontal layers and hardened sandstone at its summit. It is considered the highest point in the region; from the summit, the view stretches across the surrounding plain. In a report dated July 17, 2025, the municipal administration described Morrão as a tourist destination and reported that signs had been installed to aid orientation and environmental education. They were intended to inform visitors and highlight the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

In the area around Morro do Chapéu lies Buraco do Possidônio, a huge cylindrical sinkhole in the siltstones of the Formação Caboclo. It formed when a large underground cavity collapsed. Another landscape attraction in the wider area is Cachoeira do Ferro Doido, which lies within the Monumento Natural da Cachoeira do Ferro Doido protected area. Check current access conditions before planning a specific visit.
