Kulen Vakuf lies in the Una Valley; its historic town was built on an island. If you choose the town for a stay, you can plan culture and river activities as separate priorities: the mosque is part of the town’s founding history, while the water activities each specify their own routes.

Mosque and Local History

Kulen Vakuf was founded with the construction of the Sultan Ahmed I Mosque between 1603 and 1617. A visit to the mosque is included in Una National Park’s official excursion program. If you would like to include this stop, check before your trip whether it is currently being offered.

Castles and Historic Traces

A large medieval castle rises above the village of Ostrovica near Kulen Vakuf. The ruins of Havala Fortress lie opposite Ostrovica, across the Una Valley in which Kulen Vakuf is located. Historically, Havala overlooked the bridge over the Una and Kulen Vakuf. West of Havala, gravestone inscriptions in a Muslim cemetery remain clearly visible; they are written in Arabic script and the Turkish language. The distinction can be understood by their locations: Ostrovica is above the village, while Havala is opposite, on the far side of the valley, and historically oriented toward the bridge and the town.

Activities on the Una

The activities on the Una differ by route and activity type. Una National Park’s official excursion program includes a short rafting route from the Kulen Vakuf fire station to Buk Kulen Vakuf. A Una National Park price list offers rafting, kayaking or canoeing on the Martin Brod–Kulen Vakuf route. A rafting section described in 2015 starts upstream of Kulen Vakuf. The details vary by starting point, route and water activity, so compare the specific combination rather than just the word “rafting.” Check the current program schedule and safety requirements before your trip. Ticket conditions are also relevant for the Martin Brod route; for the section described in 2015, check current providers and conditions locally.

Fishing Along the Una

The 1.5 km-long “Kulen Vakuf” fishing area extends along the Una from the waterfall, located 150 m upstream of the large bridge in Kulen Vakuf, to the bridge over the Una leading to the villages of Klisa and Ostrovica. Fishing area 1B “Kulen Vakuf” in Una National Park is reserved exclusively for fly fishing. Check the current rules and required permits before fishing.

Hiking Trail, Cycling Route and Cultural Tour

A marked hiking trail described in 2015 leads from the town center to the Ostrovica Tower; check local trail conditions before setting out. A provider in Kulen Vakuf offers bicycles for the 6 km paved road toward Martin Brod. Ask directly about availability and the current condition of the route. A guided tour in Kulen Vakuf introduces visitors to the distinctive features of Krajina carpets; ask in advance whether this activity is available.
